Located at 395 South Tustin Street, the Orange Community of Christ is a premier example of a faith group that has the use of an attractive venue, which it rents out and engages for multiple after-church functions. Within this setting, having the right directional signage is a necessity. Although members of the congregation are present at many of the events, wayfinding signs for churches in Orange County must appeal to first-time visitors, new worshippers and those who are checking out the property for potential future rentals.
When the assistant pastor discussed the need for directional signage with our graphic artists, it became apparent that these markers needed to be functional but not disruptive of the overall exterior appearance appeal that the newly remodeled campus presents. After all, nobody likes to invest the funds in upgrading the look and curb appeal of a structure only to have signage components installed that fail to enhance the visual aesthetics. We created numerous products that provide the directional assistance needed and underscore the façade and campus setup.
Where Functionality and Visual Appeal Intersect
Altar-style maps integrate into the landscape, continue the façade’s color selection and provide practical directional assistance with a blueprint of the property and a “you are here” symbol. Our installers used four-by-four posts that we anchored into the ground to provide the right setup for a 45-degree-angle mount. These maps are excellent wayfinding tools and already in use at malls and other large commercial venues that seek to provide the easiest type of assistance to a broad range of consumers.
Black print on a white board signage identifies a variety of locations on the campus with added arrows. They point the way to the restrooms, the prayer garden the entrances and similar settings. We mounted these boards to the fences and facade, which eliminated the need for further posts. The school’s part of the campus features the same types of signs and helps with wayfinding for those needing to locate the elevator or playground as well as the school office. The church portion focuses not only on labeling the amenities of the building but also on identifying the main entrance, which is of great help for first-time visitors.
Signage that Harmonizes with Your Setting
This church community expressed the same concerns that many of our business clients mention. They want directional signage to be functional but not visually jarring. These markers, based on their functions, have to stand out. That said, there is a fine line that – when crossed – results in signage products that may fulfill their functions but do it in a clumsy manner. Our graphic artists are trained at recognizing that particular fine line and not crossing it. We use our understanding of material properties, color matching and display options to create directional products that are visually pleasing.
