Earlier, we were at the National Veterinary Association (NVA) offices to put in dimensional lettering cut from acrylic. We returned to the location to install additional pin-mounted dimensional letters in Los Angeles.
Floating 3D Letters Create a Professional and Eye-Catching Ambiance
For this project element, our technicians fabricated another set of dimensional letters. We used half-inch-thick acrylic letters because the material looks good and fits the overall atmosphere of the space. However, instead of mounting the pieces flat to the wall, we pin-mounted them. Doing so puts some distance between the wall and the backs of the elements, which creates the illusion of floating letters.
A Closer Look at Custom 3D Letters Using the Pin Mount Technique
Pin-mounting 3D lettering for office walls is a task we frequently do. Our installers use vertical pins for this project. You are probably already familiar with it. Our team uses a similar installation technique when installing reverse-lit channel letters. Of course, the size is vastly scaled down.
It is interesting to note that pin mounts are different from stud mounts. You most likely remember that we use this technique on occasion. A stud mount focuses less on aesthetics and more on guaranteeing a sturdy installation. We like to use the method when we work with heavy letters such as stainless steel, stone, and other materials. Similarly, we might use stud mounts when the wall surface is not as sturdy as we would like, and we need to connect the letters with the structures behind it.
Although a stud mount still gives the illusion that a letter floats slightly above the wall’s surface, it lacks the pointed elegance of the pin mount. It is fair to say that this technique is a beautiful option for a contemporary office or retail space where elegance and brand-building are the primary goals. Besides that, clients like to select this installation option when featuring primarily customer-facing signage.
Heightening the Effects of Pin-Mounted 3D Lettering for Office Wall Spaces
In addition to creating the space between the letter and the wall, there are some design options to make the look stand out even more. In some cases, clients request the use of paint differentiations. What we mean by that is that the front of the letter and the wall are painted in colors that differ from the letters’ sides. It is a visually stunning display that creates a significant visual appeal.
Another way of making these designs stand out is the use of lighting. Aiming a light source directly at the letters can create a combination of bright areas and shadows that turns a sign into a work of art.
