When Sorenson and Bhavnani Orthodontics expanded its office and rebranded as B Orthodontics, the clinic at 4915 Yorba Ranch Road needed new exterior signs for businesses in Yorba Linda, CA. The architect working with the clinic referred the client to us because they had worked with Superior Signs and Graphics before. We met with the clinic’s management team and designed the new signage look.

Developing an Outdoor Sign Presentation for an Existing Business

Rebranding is a standard company move. It typically occurs when a company’s leading operators change, a business acquires another, or when it is time to change a corporate persona to connect with the customer base more effectively. When discussing the signage design with the client, they determined that an artistic 3D presentation would ideally suit the brand story.

High-Density Urethane Panels Create an Ideal Display

High-density urethane (HDU) is a human-made material. It is a very dense foam impervious to insect damage, handles weather with ease, and does not bend or bow as wood might. Our technicians can carve it or shape it with a router for a three-dimensional look. In fact, we can make HDU signs look precisely like cedar plank signs without the negatives that the wood would bring to the table.

For this project, we designed and fabricated two HDU signs. One goes above the entrance door. The other sign is double-sided, which is suitable for a hanging version that addresses prospective patients approaching the clinic from either direction of the sidewalk. These signs feature an attractive textured background, 3D lettering, and a logo. The products also highlight the new color palette.

The combination of custom blue tones and a white backdrop perfectly contrasts with the light beige wall color. It makes the clinic stand out and generates interest.

A Closer Look at Color Palettes for Building Signs

The majority of clients prefer to replicate the display of the corporate persona that customers might see on a website. It allows for brand recognition and also assists with generating name recognition. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

• Wall contrast. In some cases, the usual color palette is not a workable solution because it would not contrast well with the color of the wall or siding. In these cases, we recommend keeping at least one brand color and making adjustments to the tones that are closest to the mounting surface.

• Brand emphasis. Another reason for making a change is the opportunity to boost an element of the brand story. For example, a company might choose to install 3D metal letters and keep them in metallic tones to underscore this design decision.

• Property management requirements. In malls, the property management company occasionally determines that a more uniform facade display creates a chic curb appeal. In this case, you may have to follow the design and color guidelines but focus on brand-centric signage on the inside.
