How to Choose the Right Sign Material in Buena Park, CA | Superior Signs

BY: Scott Hoffman, Superior Signs and Graphics

Choosing the right material to apply vinyl graphics to in order to create a sign is important.  The wrong material may bend, bow or degrade from wind, sun, or moisture.  There may be other considerations such as weight when choosing mounting options, and length of time the sign will need to last.

One of my favorite sign materials (or substrates), is known as gatorboard, and is a heavy duty version of foam core. It is available in black or white to suit the color sign or print you are mounting on it, and the paper face actually makes it suitable for outdoor use when covered in laminated vinyl – although it is more typically used indoors. This material is very light, but not easily damaged during production or use like foam core is.

Another favorite substrate is PVC, which is similar to gatorboard in that it can be used indoors or out – however you have to be careful about mounting in direct sunlight.  The heat of direct sun, especially if covered in a dark printed vinyl can cause it to warp.  PVC is also a little heavier than gatorboard, and is often used for hanging Real Estate signs on the “a-frame” style sign holders.  The extra weight helps keep the sign vertical when there is a strong breeze.  PVC can be easily drilled for that application, and can even accept banner grommets after drilling.

Max Metal is a little pricier substrate that is a good alternative to aluminum.  Because it is constructed of two thin sheets of aluminum wrapped around an HDPE core, a 3mm thick piece of Max Metal has the strength of .080 gauge aluminum.  The max metal is weatherproof and has a lighter weight than the aluminum, and the thicker makeup results in less sharp edges when the sign is mounted.  The white painted sides of the Max Metal sheets allow for a clean installation and easy change of vinyl graphics, or cut vinyl.

Acrylic can be used as more than an illuminated sign material.  Quarter inch thick acrylic makes a great substrate for interior wall signs.  Lobby signs would be a great application for acrylic, and you can get it in clear, green glass, and white.  I prefer clear, and use either a bevel or flame polished edge in most applications.  The resulting look when printed graphics are applied and brushed aluminum stand offs are used for wall mounting is very high end.

In summary, the location, and application for each sign will dictate which substrates will work, and then the choice becomes more about aesthetics and budget. At Superior Signs and Graphics, we can help guide  you through the selection process to ensure you get the sign you want and need!  Call us at 714.739.2855 to get started.
