Mater Dei High School is a returning client. Previously, we assisted the school with a Wall of Champions and wall graphics for the girls’ basketball and volleyball team rooms. This time, the client had another project involving signs and graphics for high school gymnasiums in Orange County, CA.
New Hanging Banners and Wall Signage Honor Student Athletes
The school displays banners marking their league championships in the various sports they offer. Another set of banners features the names and photos of the players of the year. Every so often, the client asks us to update the information and produce new banners. This time, we also replaced clear acrylic wall panels with frosted ones to reduce the glare. These panels display an ongoing list of the player of the year. Since the gym entrance has floor-to-ceiling windows, even a small change like the display of frosted panels makes a huge difference.
A Closer Look at Frosted vs. Clear Acrylic Panels
When clients decide between frosted and clear acrylic panels, we usually discuss functionality and aesthetics. Both panel types look excellent. However, there are times when frosted acrylic makes more sense.
- Reduce glare. As was the case with Mater Dei High School, a frosted finish diffuses light even if it is directly illuminated. Reducing the glare makes the sign easy to read in bright settings.
- Background considerations. Clients prefer frosted acrylic when the contrast between printed logos or lettering and the wall background is insufficient. Another reason for putting frosted acrylic in the background is the plan to add backlighting. We can hide LEDs behind the frosted panels.
- Smudge-free displays. Clear acrylic tends to show fingerprints and smudges. Frosted acrylic panels do not. When the panels are displayed in high-traffic areas where visitors may touch them, it makes more sense to use a frosted material.
