We recently had another opportunity to take on a project for Compton College. In the past, we put together an athletics passenger van wrap, commercial truck wraps for the maintenance department, and pole banners to welcome students. The latest project that we took on was larger and included plenty of 3D building lettering in Los Angeles, CA.
Large-Scale Custom Building Lettering Upgrade Boosts Wayfinding Opportunities
New 3D lettering for buildings looks excellent. That said, it is also functional. The school’s administration asked us to refurbish a monument sign and replace nine sets of three-dimensional letters that were damaged and faded.
For this blog, we want to focus on our custom building lettering. The existing signage consisted of foam and aluminum that both had reached the ends of their useful lives. We proposed to use PVC rather than sign foam or metal, which is budget-friendly yet durable. The client liked the idea, and we proceeded with the plan.
From Sketch to Fabrication and Installation
With the approved sketches, our technicians began manufacturing the individual pieces.
One-inch-thick PVC letters. For seven of the nine sets, technicians custom-cut one-inch-thick PVC to size. To prevent sun fading, we used black PVC. The advantage is that the material is black through and through, so it does not need painting.
Half-inch-thick PVC letters. We cut the lettering from half-inch-thick white PVC for the other building letters. The finished letters would then receive a silver paint job.
Installation. Each set of 3D building letters was stud-mounted to the surfaces by our specialists. It results in a secure connection to the facade and allows for a flush appearance that looks chic.
The finished products allow for a cohesive look and feel across the campus.
Working with the Materials That are Ideally Suited for the Client
Full, consistent sun exposure is tough on most materials. The sign foam that had previously been there was weathered under the UV rays. The client wanted something different that would be at least as durable but also budget-friendly. PVC checks all the boxes. Moreover, the black material we use will prevent the lightening of the color.
Other clients like the idea of metal facings for their building letters. If you favor metal, there are several options open to you. Manufactured metal letters let you pick out prismatic fronts or rounded edges. Flat-cut metal letters are among the most popular requests. That said, it is also popular to choose a different substrate, such as sign foam, and then have us add a thin laminate. It gives the illusion that the whole letter is made of metal, but it is much less expensive.
