Example of poor DIY signage – not in Richmond, TX

Front Row Signs is the Richmond, Texas area’s full-service sign and graphic design and installation professionals. We are leaders in our industry and we have numerous years worth of combined experience, training, education and talent to utilize when approaching any custom sign design and installation project for any number of large or small businesses in the diverse local industries in the community and region. Our experts can make wise judgment calls in regard to materials, cost, timeline, construction, illustration, design or any number of other factors involved in the project. There are many times in life and work where we can create a shortcut or a “simple fix” but most of the time they are temporary and few and far between. While Front Row Signs can appreciate the DIY (do-it-yourself) spirit, it can turn out disastrous if a sign or graphic is not properly installed or created. Also, some DIY construction methods may be too crude to pass codes and regulations and cause other hazards. Here are some examples and reasons why DIY signage can be a mistake for your business.

Regulations and Other Requirements

The first rule of thumb when thinking about signage is to always start with rules and regulations. This means you need to check with local/municipal, county, state and federal laws regarding signage, including necessary permits. Your local governments may have size and placement restrictions. There may even be restrictions on the color of your sign. Franchise gas station owners in other cities have had to lower their sign due to “distractive colors” even though the sign colors were a recognized worldwide franchise! So it is always wise to check on these requirements. You may also need building permits for light construction. There are sometimes neighborhood standards or requirements from your property manager.

Safety Concerns

Beyond your concerns with permits and regulations, you also need to think about the safety and security of your customers, the general public and your staff and management at the business location. Safety is a big deal. You don’t want to hurt anyone as a result of a mistake made when installing a DIY sign at your small business in the community. This would definitely not be a favorable situation, any way you slice it. Beyond just the people injured, there could be other serious consequences for you too. If they know or find out about the DIY construction and installation method, they could take you to court and sue you for negligence.

Your Reputation, Image and Identity

A quality sign shows the integrity of the business. You don’t want to appear to be a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants operation. If you aren’t able to purchase a custom sign, it is best to wait. Use word of mouth and other networking and marketing techniques until you can properly install a quality sign that shows who your business really is and what it can do for the community.

The Real Cost to DIY Signage

The consequences related to DIY signage can negatively affect you to the point where it could threaten to dissolve the company. These costs are higher in the long run than any short-term expense involved with ordering a quality sign.
