Insignia Signs recently received a request from an apartment complex that was changing the name of the property. Many new signs were needed throughout the property, but some signs were in good condition still. Insignia Signs is always happy to save our customers money so we suggested doing coverups for some of the signs. A vinyl that we offer is called “block out gray back” digital vinyl, which allows us to cover existing graphics without the old graphic being visible – it covers it up! If a sign substrate is in good condition we definitely suggest this option to save our customers money, so rather than paying for (2) new 4’x4′ MDO panels, we suggested covering up the existing panels. Here is a picture of the panel “BEFORE”:
The existing sign faces were in great condition, and our customer liked the idea of doing the coverup. The prints were designed, approved, and ready for production. We printed the (2) decals on our gray backing block out material and laminated them with a UV matte overlaminate. A trick Insignia uses when doing cover ups is adding a bleed to just the top and right side of the print, so when being installed, Dean aligns the bottom and left edges to the board and trims the excess at the top and right. The purpose of this is to prevent any of the old graphic being visible. A trick of the trade we have learned over the years!
The other vinyl we carry that isn’t gray backing is a white backing. Once printed and laminated, the faces of the white and gray backings look identical, there is no visible difference. The choice in vinyl is completely based on where the print is going. The white backing is great for lightboxes because it allows light to shine through it at night.
The (2) single sided 4×4 panels were completed successfully, here is the end result:
