Insignia Signs recently received a call from an employee at Montevista Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. Montevista has been the leader in behavioral health care for the greater Las Vegas area for almost 30 years. It is a 162-bed state-of-the-art mental health facility dedicated to providing quality behavioral health care to promote growth and structure for patients and families.
The hospital’s signage needs were simple but the process was important to be sure the final outcome was perfect. Here is a “before” picture:
AN “A” MISSING!
The first step in creating the missing A was going to the location to do a site survey. Our production manager, Dean, went to Montevista Hospital to measure the height of the other letters and also to trace a pattern. The purpose of the pattern was to be sure the new A matched the existing A as closely as possible. The pattern would allow us to cut that exact shape out of the new material.
The existing letters were made of a material 3/16″ in depth so we used an acrylic that was the same thickness. Dean used his paper pattern to cut the letter out by hand and then primed it and spray painted it red. The letter was ready for installation. We installed the letter using industrial strength double sided tape and a clear silicone.
Letters that are individually cut are normally cut with a CNC router, but since an A consists of only straight lines we were able to cut it by hand – which allowed us to give a low price to the customer. The sign is restored back to “9′ CLEARANCE” with just a few easy steps.
Dimensional Letters can be made from a variety of different materials including dibond, mdo, acrylic, formed plastic, and stainless steel. Dibond is the most commonly used material for exterior letters and is 1/8″ thick in depth. If someone is looking for a letter with a little more dimension we suggest the mdo which is a 1/2″ thick wood. Acrylic comes in many different sizes, we used a 3/16″ thick sheet for this A. We usually meet with our customers to determine what they prefer and what material we would suggest.
Thank you for checking out our post and if you know anyone who needs dimensional letters – give Insignia Signs a call at (702) 444-7554.
