Recently I saw an advertisement from a local business publication that was selling advertising space. I looked a little closer, and saw that the smallest was a little more than 9 square inches (1/6th of a page) at a cost of $350. The advertisement runs for one month, hit or miss, that’s it. And, if you run your ad in their publication every month, it would end up costing $1,104 for a year of advertising.
Thinking this was a lot of money for a small ad in a local publication, I decided to compare this to another form of advertising that I’m familiar with: vehicle graphics. I needed to get some information to be able to quantify my comparison with hard numbers, so I inquired and discovered that the publication has a circulation of about 10,000 a month.
Compared to the reach vehicle graphics get, there are intersections in Denver that see more than 10,000 vehicles in a 24 hour period! And, I-25 sees exponentially more vehicles every day.
So, if the goal is to get your brand and message where it can be seen, vehicle graphics certainly have the potential to be seen by a lot more people than print advertising. So, let’s look at the cost comparison.
To cover a rear window in a car, truck or van with 8 square feet of window perforation (printed, laminated, & installed) would cost $260. This equates to $4.33 to $7.22 per month compared to $92 per month (for a one year commitment). To take the comparison one step further, a business could advertise 1 time at $350 for 30 days, or advertise on a vehicle for $260 that is visible every time it is driven or parked in a public place for 3 to 5 YEARS. Literally, a business could get brand new vehicle graphics 4 times per year, and it would still cost less than a small ad in a publication that potentially reaches 10,000. Also, consider this trend; print publication readership is declining due to the increased use of search engines and other electronic media.
