When Applied Companies, LLC relocated to their newly-purchased building at 28825 Ranney Parkway in Westlake, Ohio, they called on All Kinds of Sign for their signage needs. The project included refacing (putting new graphics) on an existing freestanding monument sign. The sign had stone pillars with a tiled base and glass blocks between the pillars on the base. Letters had been mounted on the glass block. We did not want to repeat that methodology, as the result was less than spectacular.
Instead, we fabricated 2 signs using computer-cut self-adhesive vinyl on aluminum composite material (coated aluminum sandwiching a high density 3mm polyethylene core). They were attached to the glass block with silicone. The result was fairly good, a definite improvement over the previous design, and was used for several years. We also installed plastic numbers from Gemini on each side of one of the pillars to proclaim the address.
Applied decided to do some rebranding, this necessitated refacing the monument sign. Applied and All Kinds of Signs agreed that it would be better if the graphics were easily changed out. AKS suggested replacing the glass block with a painted cabinet made of aluminum extrusions. As the existing sign was already illuminated externally, it was not necessary (and, in fact, would have been against city code) to have internal illumination. This allowed us to continue using aluminum composite material, which holds up to the elements extremely well, is not prone to damage from insects and won’t delaminate. 3mm thick ACM fits into sign cabinet channels nicely. It is also relatively inexpensive, making it an ideal substrate for the purpose.
All Kinds of Signs sized up the opening between the pillars, drew up the necessary paperwork and submitted the drawings and application to the city towards obtaining a permit. When the permit was granted, the cabinet was fabricated and painted. We printed cut-to-size ACM panels on our CET flatbed printer, using designs from Applied. For added protection, the panels were subsequently laminated with a Clear Shield liquid laminate made for coating UV inks.
The glass blocks were removed and old mortar was cleaned from the pillars and base. As the pillars are stone, there were high points in the area where the cabinet was to go that had to be chipped off. Once this was complete, we put the cabinet in place and secured it on the sides and bottom. It was easy to remove the top retainers, slide the panels in place and reattach the retainers. Picture time!
