25 years ago the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. In a number of ways this act has touched more people than the civil rights laws of the past. All the handicapped parking places, the larges bathroom stalls, the ramps, the cut outs in side walks, the bathroom signs and the braille in places like elevators all comes from the ADA.
It has had a positive effect on the disabled, it has also has an effect of all of us. Elevators and ramps exist where only stairs existed in the past. Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. The law applies to employers with 15 or more employees.
