Flags are symbols that represent a group. Flags are a special type of banner. Examples of flags are the US flag, state flags and battle flags. Many Flags communicate or carry an emoution or a concept. They can be very powerful.
Flags also are mounted on one edge. If they were on 2 edges, they would be a banner. The advantage of a single pole is directional. They can show wind direction or the direction the carrier is traveling.
The use of flags for communication is mostly military and largely naval. The flags are used to communicate to other units or ships, who you are and what you are doing. Tell another you are going to the right, you are carrying dangerous cargo, don’t come close – we have a driver in the water, we need assistance, we need a doctor, and many other flags are common.
The term banner is more general. It includes flags, but can be flown on a pole, a frame, a table, or any other structure. It always has a message, but the message can be very direct, commercial and 2 dimensional.
Banners are powerful and cost effective. You want to bring in customers, tell the world about an event or invite people – a banner may be the way to do it.
