The Wind with Outdoor Banners

SYNOPSIS: The problem is a gust of wind. A 35 mph steady wind is often easier to deal with than a series of 35 mph gusts.
BY: ,
Large Banners have special requirements. Most banners are on the side of a building or are smaller. But dealing with the effect of the wind requires some special techniques. Average wind speed is not the real problem. The problem is a gust of wind. A 35 mph steady wind is often easier to deal with than a series of 35 mph gusts. The reason is that the gusts jerk the seams and gommetts pulling them apart. The snap of the wind stresses the matterial. Anchor points and stressed and the banner will start to come apart at the weakest point. There are also a number of things to reduce stress. Here is a list A cord or rope in the hem puts more stress on the rope and less on the banner. Ropes are made for stress. Reinforcing Grommets with additional banner material is a great idea. You can see these in the form of eninforce corners. Heavier material. Many banners are made from 12 or 13 oz. material. Using an 18 or 22 ounce vinyl or heavy poly cotton increases the banners ability to resist wind more than the 150% increase in thickness. Addition of “Air Relief” holes. These are half circle holes in the banner. The idea is wind will push [caption id="attachment_974" align="alignright" width="300"]Air Relief holes are half circles that let the gusts through Air Relief holes are half circles that let the gusts through[/caption] these open and flow through  reducing the resistance on the banner. Some citiy ordenantes specify these in thier signage codes. Open mesh materials – these are specialty materials with an open weave to let the air pass, but still have a graphic on one side.
