Want to increase your business? Banners are a fast and easy way to tell people about events, sales and just that you are here to help them. Designing a good banner is easier than you think. Do not get stuck in the artistic or subjective noise. Use these 5 steps to create a great banner.
- Colors can make or break any signage. Don’t just pick your favorite color. You need a high contrast 2 color combination. Black and white, yellow and brown, any 2 colors that stand out will work. This will help the viewer to read your message in a fast and clean way.
- Be to the point and bold. A lot of small business owners have a lot to say and they tend to want to put it all in the banner. Don’t fall into this mistake. Use minimal text, say it load and big. Draw the customers in, then tell them the details. The word SALE will out preform a full description and be reusable. Say it load, bold and short – your bottom line will thank you.
- Keep it positive and simple. People do not read signs, they view signs. Complex explanations and limitations need to be explained after they come into your business. Negative messages also cause people to avoid. One to five word messages work best. Showing a product work better than company names.
- Use basic fonts – Many people like fancy or complex fonts. Don’t do it! Use simple and clear Fonts and you will be rewarded. Complex, frilly, or odd fonts just do not get read. Customers skip them and move on. You want to STOP that person for a second, and make them think “Oh I need that”. Making it hard for them to read simply means they don’t.
- wind and motion. If you have a little breeze or motion, it attracts attention. Motion is a good thing. In a static world it creates attention.
That is it. Follow these 5 steps and you will maximize your chance of creating a successful banner. Most banners that don’t work will break one or more of these guidelines.
