Today, we’re going to continue our 2-part series on Self-Care and Self-Awareness. This time, we’re going to discuss the importance of taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally. If we care for ourselves, then we feel nourished and energized.
Physical Self-Care Ideas
- Get the right amount of sleep you need daily. For most people, this is seven to nine hours a day. If you need to de-compress and need a nap during the day during a stressful time, it’s all right.
- Find an exercise you love doing. Pilates, yoga, and swimming all help with stress and anxiety. Personally, I love aqua aerobics and find it helps me both physically and mentally. I make sure to get up for class no matter how tired I am.
- Do an at-home body scan, beginning at your feet and making your way up. Pay attention to any abnormal areas that hurt or have bruises or scars. If you can pamper/treat yourself at home, do it, otherwise schedule an appointment to see your doctor.
- Splurge on a spa and salon day. It feels good to and get a manicure and pedicure done or a soothing massage. If you can’t afford a spa day, invite some friends over, share your supplies and have a DIY spa day.
- Purchase clothes that flatter the body you have. Don’t overstress about fitting into an old outfit. Buy an outfit that showcases the curves you have currently.
Emotional Self-Care Ideas
- Allow yourself to feel your emotions. Own them as yours. Respect them, and realize it’s up to you how you react to them.
- Practice forgiveness. This includes forgiving yourself for past mistakes and forgiving others. Sometimes, forgiveness is more about peace for us than the other person.
- Give yourself compliments. Whether you start the day by giving yourself three compliments in the mirror or end the day by writing yourself a love letter, practice the art of self-love.
- Schedule time to journal each day. You can write a list of your current goals, your gratitude list, or even draw how you’re feeling.
- Ask for help from a mental health professional if you think you need further support with your self-care journey.
