Both the pump body and the thermostat housing are plastic, and they come out together because they share a gasket that's replaced with them. The dominant failure is seepage from that housing, the pump body, or the gasket between them. The B9 carries a second path earlier A4 generations never had: a seal between the N493's electric motor and its valve can weep coolant on its own. A shop chasing the obvious plastic parts misses that seal if it doesn't know the N493's internal layout.
What the Car Shows You Before It Tells You
Coolant from either path lands on the front of the block, tucked under the intake manifold, where engine heat and airflow evaporate it before a drop reaches your driveway. You're left with that sweet smell after shutoff, a reservoir that's dropped a few millimeters between fill-ups, and dried pink or white residue you won't spot without pulling the intake for a real look. The smell is ethylene glycol cooking off a surface that's warm but not yet dripping.
