Concord, CA – Computer Purchasing Advice |The Future of Desktop PCs?

BY: Wade Cantrell, Computer Sales & Service

Not too long ago, Intel introduced the “NUC” (Next Unit of Computing) that configures modern computing solutions in the smallest possible form factor. These NUCs are small; only 4.4”x4.5”x1.5” in size yet contain powerful processors (currently up to 3rd generation Intel i5 CPU), plenty of memory, and fast solid state drives (SSD). The NUC is an obvious solution for computing solutions requiring small spaces. And, the NUC is powerful enough for most general business and consumer needs. The NUC is not currently optimum for high-end, computing intensive applications, or for gaming. The NUC can drive dual monitors (useful for many business applications including accounting and purchasing). Per Intel, the NUC can be used for digital surveillance, driving digital signage, and intelligent vending.

We purchased one of the NUC platforms (NUC Kit DC3217IYE) and assembled a system to see how this tiny system compared to a standard custom built PC. While building this NUC, we soon recognized that Intel sacrificed upgradability and flexibility to achieve this small size. Some limitations of this NUC kit include:

1) The NUC does not have the typical audio ports for speakers and microphone. The options for sound are either using a) the HDMI signal and a monitor with speakers (or port for speakers), or b) USB speakers connected directly to the NUC.

2) The CPU is soldered down and thus cannot be upgraded, or replaced if it fails.

3) The NUC has only three USB ports which offer limited connectivity out of the box, and more importantly the USB ports are only USB 2.0 standard.

4) Can only support SSD drives which limit the capacity of storage to a current maximum of 500GB with current available technology.

The positives of this NUC are:

1) Very low power requirements: Typically using around 20 watts.

2) Very small size.

3) Built-in dual video capabilities.

4) Very quiet operation.

5) Easy to assemble.

6) It has a VESA mounting bracket which allows it to be mounted on the back of the monitor.

We have since sold this Intel NUC to a business customer in Concord, CA who will use it for general office work and QuickBooks. This customer purchased it because of its small size thus reducing clutter on her desk – a perfect solution!
