Earlier this month, Wade Cantrell of Cantrell’s Computer Sales & Service did a Cyber Security Workshop at the Concord Chamber of Commerce for small business owners and executives. Here is some of what he shared.
All small business owners value their critical business data. And, most feel that by having a backup solution and anti-virus software, all their information is secure. Many business owners also feel that that hackers are not interested since they are a small business. The bad guys are always going for the gold – big companies, right?
Not true! 81% of all breaches happen to small and medium sized businesses and 1 in 5 business will suffer a cyber breach this year. Most cyber attacks can bypass a business’s basic security measures because the cyber attackers have improved their skills. It’s important to defend our businesses against these newer forms of cyber-attacks, or risk losing, or losing access, to our critical data.
As a small business, how long could you survive with no access to data or systems? The answer to this question will help dictate what security and business continuity measures are needed to protect the business.
The size of a company doesn’t matter to cyber attackers. The bad guys are doing high volume attacks and looking for “low hanging fruit”. Sometimes they are looking for important information like a customer’s contact info which can be sold on the dark web. They may also be looking for a lead to hack into a larger company. Whatever the reason, the small businesses that lack in cyber security are the easiest targets. Recent data shows the average data breach cost a small business $53,970.
There are a lot of IT companies who aren’t focusing on security. But that’s ignoring the threats around us and is a disservice to their clients.
