This week I’d like to tell you about a recent client. Of course, his or her name has been changed for confidentiality.
When Tony called me, he was in a state of desperation. He didn’t know what to do or where to turn. He had been through traditional talk therapy in the past and did not find it helpful for him. He also did not want to be put on drugs that would not really get to the source of his anxiousness.
He described himself as currently being a very negative person but that he used to be positive. He was extremely anxious and there were days he did not want to leave the house. He was very nervous in new social situations. He also noticed that he would get angry very easily. His inner critic would never stop chastising him. And he worried about literally everything, even things that were likely improbable.
Tony’s issues had been getting worse over time. However, now, they were debilitating.
Tony had gone back to school after realizing his first choice of career didn’t make him happy. He had graduated in May but since then hadn’t been able to find a job, not because they weren’t out there, but rather because of severe social nervousness and lack of confidence – he was afraid he would not be good enough. His new trade required him to perform a physical demonstration of his skills at each interview. With his significant fear of failure, he could not perform well in the demonstration. His anxiousness kept growing and got to the point that when he went to his last interview, he threw up in the parking lot before the interview.
Having a baby at home increased his feelings of inadequacy and anxiousness as he had a fear of not being able to take care of and support his family and also of being a bad father.
The frequency of not leaving the house increased to the point he rarely went out.
Tony came in to see me three weeks ago. He is now a totally different person. Even after the second session, he said he felt 100% better. At his third session, there was one area left he felt he needed to work on which was not worrying about what strangers thought of him. When he left after that session, he felt all his goals were met.

Tony is now a man with confidence who knows he is more than good enough. He no longer feels like he is at war with the world and has already met new people with ease. Interviews are set up for the coming week and he is looking forward to them. He feels at peace with who he is and knows he can handle any situation that comes up. He told me he now feels open, accepting of others, and positive about his life.
