Just thinking about having to get on a plane would put “Joanie” in a panic. She had not traveled far from home because of her fear. If she absolutely had to get on a plane, she would need to take incredibly strong drugs to make it through and even then the sheer terror she felt during the flight was unbearable. “Joanie” had always dreamed of taking a trip to Hawaii with her family but she would never be able to fly from the East coast there.
“Joanie” found me through a mutual friend. When I met her, she told me she had previously seen a therapist for over 50 session. It had helped a little for a short while but the fear was now worse than ever. In fact, she had now started to have random panic attacks. It was very important for her to get rid of these fears so she could live a “normal life.”
One of the hypnotic techniques I used when working with “Joanie” was age regression. This is where you guide a client into the hypnotic state and help them access the cause of their issue. The first memory she told me about was her remembering 9-11. I knew this was not the cause because she had the issue for years prior to that tragic day. We continued working and she ultimately landed in the memory of when she was 18 and she came home after shopping at Christmas time. She walked into her house being robbed. She was held up at knifepoint and threatened that she would be killed. The robbers decided to leave and “Joanie” just went outside and screamed for help from her neighbors.
In hypnosis, she realized that day she made a decision that she absolutely had to be in control and if she were not in control she wouldn’t be safe.
Once we knew the belief that “Joanie” had, we were able to transform it to a belief that served her. We can not control all the events that happen to us but we absolutely can control our responses to them. “Joanie” realized she was capable of handling whatever happened to her.
About two weeks after we finished working together, I received a text from her. She said her son had been in a car accident. In the past, she would have immediately gone into a panic and not handled the situation in a way that benefited ted her and her son. However, now she remained calm, even though she was upset. She was able to help him take care of what needed to be done; she was thrilled!

The best message from “Joanie” came about 1 year later. She sent me pictures of her and her family in Hawaii. She said it was a dream come true and they had the time of their lives.
