These knots occur when muscles work harder than they should, remain contracted longer than they should, or fail to fully recover after stress or trauma. You won’t always know about them when they first begin. But when they appear, they linger unless you do something about them.
So, What is Trigger Point Therapy?
Trigger point therapy is a concentrated, hands-on therapy that addresses those knots specifically. It’s never a full-body massage. It’s precision work. I find the areas of concern, add steady pressure, and wait for the muscle to release. Sometimes, I use my thumb, sometimes my knuckles, and sometimes a small instrument to get the desired angle.
You might feel a little discomfort, but it’s a productive kind. Most people say it feels like pressure followed by a noticeable release. That release? That’s the muscle letting go of the tight contraction.
What Trigger Point Work Can Assist With
If you have tension that won’t stretch out or hurt which migrates but never really stops, trigger point therapy can help. It’s often used for:
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Headaches (especially tension or migraine-related)
- Low back pain
- Jaw tension (TMJ issues)
- Sciatica-like symptoms
- Limited range of motion
Trigger points can also disrupt your posture, your sleep, and your exercise routine. Release them to restore the natural functioning of the muscles and ease the bite of daily discomfort.
What a Session is Like
During your appointment, I’ll check in about what you’re feeling, where the pain is, what makes it worse, and what seems to help. Then, I’ll palpate the muscles to locate trigger points. Some are easy to find. Others hide. They may not even be near where you feel the pain. That’s part of the work: tracing symptoms back to their source.
Once we identify the spots, I apply direct pressure and hold until the muscle starts to release. I may come back to the same spot a few times. If needed, I’ll add some gentle movement or stretches to support the release.
It’s intensive work, but at your pace. You are always in control.
One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Some individuals experience relief on the first go-round. Others might take a few treatments before noticing a significant change, particularly if the pain’s been lingering. It’s all about your body, your background, and the condition of your tissues.
Trigger point therapy usually works best as part of a comprehensive plan. It can complement deep tissue massage, myofascial techniques, or even chiropractic care if your body is in need on several levels.
