Your heel eases halfway through a walk, then hurts again when you stand up after lunch. With plantar fasciitis, a better hour can be followed by another sore one. I'm Geri León, a board certified massage therapist in Castro Valley. I use shiatsu to work on the muscle tension that can accompany heel pain, including tightness through the calf. When the sole is too tender for direct pressure, there's still room to work above the ankle. We can begin there and leave the painful spot alone.
Why Your Heel Can Hurt After Rest
The plantar fascia runs along the sole from the heel toward the front of the foot and helps support the arch. When this band of tissue becomes irritated, the first steps after sleep or sitting can hurt. Walking for a few minutes may ease the pain. After another stretch of sitting, those first steps can hurt again.
You can also feel pain after activity, even if your foot felt better while you were moving. Pain easing during a walk doesn't mean the irritation has cleared. I take the sore morning heel into account even if you arrive later in the day feeling better.
Why I Include The Calf
Tight calves can limit how far the ankle bends and add strain to the plantar fascia. The calf connects to the back of the heel through the Achilles tendon; the fascia runs underneath. That connection helps explain why I include the calf when the lower leg aches along with the foot. I can work along the calf with broad palm pressure, then use my fingers on a smaller area of tense muscle. Beginning here lets me address an ache you may feel higher up the leg while the sensitive sole rests. Direct pressure under the heel can wait if it feels sharp.
The Feel Of Held Pressure
In shiatsu, I hold pressure at a selected point before releasing it and moving on. You feel a steady contact rather than a stroke traveling along the skin. A palm spreads that contact across more of the calf; fingertips make it more concentrated. Neither has to be heavy.
Held pressure gives us time to notice how one area responds. If the calf tightens against my hand, I'll ease off or change the contact. Gentle movement or stretching can also be part of shiatsu when it fits the limits you've been given for your foot.
You Stay Dressed For Shiatsu
Shiatsu takes place on a soft mat or massage table, with pressure applied through comfortable clothing. There is no oil to rub into your skin. If you like the feeling of a steady hand on a tense calf, this may be a good way to receive massage while staying dressed. I also offer foot massage with oil or lotion. Its gliding strokes feel different from shiatsu's held contact. Either service can focus on muscular soreness. I can talk through that difference with you if you're deciding which you'd enjoy.
What Relief From Massage Can Mean
An aching calf can keep bothering you after you've put your feet up. Easing that muscular soreness is a worthwhile reason for a visit, even while the heel needs further treatment. The relief may be temporary, and a more comfortable leg doesn't mean the fascia has healed.
Supportive footwear and the stretches or strengthening exercises prescribed for your foot continue between appointments. I'll work within any restrictions from your treating clinician. If the heel pain hasn't been assessed, a diagnosis comes first: several conditions can hurt in that small area, and an injury may need different care.
