By the third trimester, finding a way to lie down that does not ache takes real effort. You rearrange the pillows, settle for the least uncomfortable side, and wake with your hips and low back complaining anyway. I am Geri León, a massage therapist in Castro Valley, and I build prenatal sessions around the discomfort you bring in that day. The relief comes from rebuilding the whole session, position, support, and pressure, around the pregnancy you have today.
The Table Is Built Around You Before the Massage Begins
Past the first trimester, I do not lay you flat on your back or face-down. You rest on your side, with a pillow under the belly, one between your knees, and support under the top arm so you are not holding your shoulder up. That side-lying setup is the ordinary way I build a session for a pregnant body, and it keeps working right through the third trimester. If you are still shifting, gripping the table, or holding your breath, I keep adjusting the support until you can rest without holding yourself in place.
The setup is also where I learn the most. If a pillow between your knees eases the pull at your hip, that unsupported position was adding load all on its own, and the table was recreating part of your complaint before I touched a muscle. So before I choose anything, I ask what feels tight today, how far along you are, and whether your care team has given you any positioning restrictions. What has changed since your last appointment matters more than last month’s plan.
You Set the Pressure, and I Adjust to Your Response
Pregnancy can leave your whole body more tender than you expect, so I choose the pressure from your response on the table that day. The useful pressure in a prenatal session is pleasant, never painful, and you can change it at any moment. While I work, I watch your breathing as closely as I listen to your words. When your breath stays slow and even, I keep working at that depth. The moment it catches, I ease off before you have to ask. You also control the position, the draping, and any area you want me to skip.
What an Hour of Hands-On Work Adds to the Pillows
A pillow wedge can support a better position at home, and I will happily show you how to set one up for sleep. For the muscles that have spent months carrying the extra load, massage adds carefully tuned hands-on work, a full hour of it, matched to how tender you are that week. Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity, so your low back and hips work harder as your body changes, and massage can ease the muscular part of that discomfort. Supported, unhurried work can also help you relax, support circulation, and make movement feel easier for a time. I measure the session by how much more comfortable you feel and how freely you move, while your body keeps changing week to week.
When a Symptom Belongs With Your Care Team First
Ordinary muscular pregnancy discomfort often shifts with posture, activity, or support. A few patterns are different, and I want you to route them correctly. New swelling, warmth, redness, or pain in one leg or arm goes to your pregnancy care team promptly, and so does any sudden severe headache, vision change, bleeding, or trouble breathing. Massage can wait until your team has answered the medical question. Everything else is a conversation we can have before your first session.
If you are far along and wondering whether massage is still an option, the setup adapts with your stage, and it is an easy thing to mention to your provider at your next appointment. My name is Geri León, and at my Castro Valley practice I build each prenatal session around the body you bring in that week.
