Knee Relief In Tucson Before You Consider Surgery

BY: Josh Adams, Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ

Your knee aches on the stairs. It stiffens up after you sit through a whole movie. A doctor floated the word replacement, and now you're lying awake wondering if that's really the only road left.

For a lot of people, it isn't. Not yet, anyway.

Knee replacement is a good operation when a knee is genuinely worn out. But plenty of people's knees are hurting for reasons where care never involves a scalpel.

Why The Knee Hurts In The First Place

Cartilage thins with age and use. The joint loses its smooth glide, the surfaces start to rub, and inflammation creeps in. That's osteoarthritis, and it's the usual reason knees ache as people get older.

Here's the part that surprises folks. How worn a knee looks on an X-ray doesn't always match how much it hurts. Weak muscles, sloppy movement, and extra load pile pain on top of the arthritis. Those pieces can be changed.

What We Try Before Surgery

The knee carries far less load when the muscles around it are strong. That's where we start.

  • Strengthening the quads, hamstrings, and hips so the joint isn't doing all the work
  • Movement retraining, since bad mechanics grind the knee down faster
  • Weight and activity guidance to take pressure off
  • Bracing to unload the sore part of the joint
  • Injections in some cases to calm a flared-up knee

None of this regrows cartilage. What it does is change how the knee feels and moves, and for a lot of people that shift is big enough to push surgery off for years, sometimes for good.

Who Does Well Without An Operation

People who still have decent motion and are willing to put in the work. If your knee bends and straightens reasonably well and you'll commit to the exercises, the odds are in your favor.

A bone-on-bone knee with constant pain and no motion is a different story. We'll be honest with you when a knee has reached that point.

Give A Real Program A Fair Shot

The mistake people make is quitting after two weeks. Muscle takes time to build, and a cranky knee doesn't calm down overnight. Give a good program a couple of months before you judge whether it's working.

That's not stalling. Rushing to surgery you didn't need is its own kind of setback, with recovery and stiffness of its own.

If your knee's been talking to you and surgery feels like a big leap, come see what else is on the table first. Call Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ or book through the online form, and we'll lay out the options for your knee.
