Easing Hip Pain In Oro Valley Without Surgery

BY: Josh Adams, Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ

Hip pain has a way of shrinking your world. Putting on socks turns into a project. Getting out of a low chair takes a plan. The walk you used to enjoy gets shorter, then one day you just stop taking it.

When a hip wears down, replacement gets brought up. It's a solid surgery. But it isn't always the next step, and not everyone with a sore hip needs one right now.

If you're an older adult near Oro Valley with a nagging hip, there's care worth trying first.

Where The Pain Comes From

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint, and over the years the cartilage that cushions it wears thin. The joint stiffens, the surfaces rub, and pain settles into the groin, the side of the hip, or down the thigh. Osteoarthritis is the common driver.

Not all hip pain is the joint itself, though. Weak glutes, tight muscles, and back trouble can all feed hip pain. Sorting out what's really going on is step one, because the fix depends on the cause.

What We Do Before Surgery

The muscles around the hip carry a lot of the load. Strengthen them and the joint gets a break.

  • Strengthening for the glutes and core so the hip has support
  • Stretching and mobility work to loosen a stiff joint
  • Gait and movement retraining to ease the strain
  • Guidance on activity and weight to reduce pressure on the hip
  • Injections in some cases to quiet a painful flare

This won't undo arthritis. What it can do is take enough pain out of the joint that you get back to walking, sleeping, and getting through the day. For many people that's enough to hold off surgery for a good while.

Who This Suits

Adults who still have workable motion in the hip and are ready to put in steady effort. If the joint moves and you'll do the exercises, conservative care often pays off.

A hip that's severely worn with constant, deep pain may be past that point. We'll tell you plainly when that's the case.

The Sleep Problem Nobody Brings Up

One thing we hear over and over is that the hip wrecks sleep. You lie on your side and it aches, so you flip, and now the other hip complains. Bad nights pile up and everything feels worse, because pain and exhaustion feed each other. Part of what we work on is practical, like which side to lie on, a pillow between the knees to keep the hip aligned, and easing the joint down before bed. Getting a few solid nights back changes how the whole day goes.

The Honest Part

Some hips do eventually need replacing, and there's nothing wrong with that. Trying conservative care first isn't giving up on surgery. It's making sure you don't have it sooner than you truly need it.

If your hip has been holding you back and you're around Oro Valley, let's look at your options before you decide. Contact Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ by phone or the online form, and we'll build a plan for your hip.
