Solve Potential Issues Before They Cause Damage

There are some issues which are common to certain Audi models, trim levels, and years. While each Audi has its quirks, the Audi A5 sometimes presents a unique issue: a high pitched whistling sound. Over the years we have worked on many A5’s with a whistling problem, and in this article we will discuss the causes of whistling in this vehicle and the steps we can take to correct it. PCV Valve Issue The majority of the time when we see an A5 with a whistling issue, it’s due to a part in the engine called the PCV valve. This part is responsible for “venting” gases out of the engine and keeping harmful material out of the environment. This part is necessary for the engine to fire properly, but on some A5 models it’s prone to failure. When the PCV value does go bad or is going bad, a whistling sound can present itself. Other problems which stem from this issue are engine misfires, excessive oil loss, the engine running rough, and a suction of the oil cap which makes it difficult to remove. PCV whistling usually occurs when the vehicle is idling. If the PCV valve is the reason for your A5’s whistling, we can typically replace the affected parts and get you back up and running quickly. Turbocharger Failure A second and more involved/costly issue which can cause whistling is an issue with the vehicle’s turbocharger. This issue will typically present itself during acceleration, when the turbocharger is activated. If the turbocharger is suspected, we can perform a diagnosis and determine if it can be repaired or requires replacement. Sometimes certain components can be repaired or replaced rather than the turbocharger itself. The whistling caused by a turbocharger issue is typically loud and hard to miss. HVAC System Problem Another potential (and much simpler) explanation for a whistling noise in an A5 is an issue with the heating and air system. If the whistling you hear is more subtle, only occurs when the air kicks on, or seems like it’s coming from inside the car, it’s likely an issue with the air filter or the ventilation system itself. We can typically diagnose these issues easily and stop the whistling with a quick service of the HVAC system.
