Local Car Pros Solve Transmission Problems Transmission issues are among the most worrisome problems for all drivers. When a vehicle’s transmission has an issue, the repairs can be expensive and sometimes take more time than problems in other areas of the vehicle. Subaru vehicles are almost universally praised for their reliability, especially their popular midsize SUV, the Outback. While Subarus are generally hard to stop, some models of Outbacks have fairly common transmission issues. As a leading provider of automotive care and repair in Southern California, our team has a great deal of experience working on all types of vehicles and issues. We have worked with many Subaru Outbacks over the years, and in this article, we seek to educate Outback owners on transmission issues. Read on to learn about the CVT transmission in the Outback, what problems can arise with the system, and how our team can get your vehicle running smoothly again. What is a CVT Transmission?  While some people who have a bit of background knowledge about cars might know what CVT stands for, most average car owners aren’t familiar with this term. When referring to a vehicle’s transmission, CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. CVT vehicles are similar to automatic vehicles because they don’t have to be shifted into gear. However, CVT vehicles don’t “shift” like traditional automatic cars. Instead, they feature gradual and smooth acceleration, allowing the vehicle to use the optimal amount of fuel and run at peak efficiency. What are the Symptoms of a CVT Issue?  While CVT transmissions can have their advantages, they are not without problems. Because these are transmission issues, they generally relate to the acceleration/performance of the vehicle. The first sign of a potential issue is a delayed response when trying to accelerate. Another symptom is uneven acceleration, or even a shudder/jerking action when trying to press the gas. Sometimes these issues can be accompanied by a continuous whining noise while driving. What Causes CVT Issues?  There are a few common culprits of CVT issues in Outbacks. These include the following:
  • Lack of regular maintenance, which can cause loss of transmission fluid or contamination. Either scenario leads to more wear and tear on the transmission itself.
  • Sensor and/or software issues, which can cause the CVT system to malfunction and lead to several performance problems.
  • CVT component issues, such as slipping belts or failure of solenoids to control the level of transmission fluid pressure. Either of these problems can cause a loss of power when accelerating.
While these are the most common reasons for CVT issues, our team can perform a full diagnostic and find the true cause of your vehicle’s issue. What Is Your Repair Process Like?  We have the right team, equipment, and customer-focused approach to perform quick and complete repairs on issues with Subaru CVT transmissions. When we diagnose an issue, we provide a plain-language explanation to our customer, clearly explain our plan to correct the problem, and receive their approval before moving forward.
