Discover Why Your Vehicle Stalls When Stopping Stalling when stopping is a fairly common, but concerning, issue in many different makes of vehicles. No one wants to experience stalling issues, and if you have ever been in a stalled vehicle, you understand the stress it can cause. When it comes to stalling issues, some vehicle makes, models, trim levels, and/or year models are more susceptible than others. As a leading provider of auto repair services in Southern California, our team of trained experts often diagnoses and repairs stalling issues. In this article, we will focus on one model’s stalling issues in particular: the Chevy Equinox. These practical SUVs are popular for many reasons, and when cared for properly, they can be reliable. However, they are prone to experiencing stalling issues, so we wanted to provide some insight into what causes stalling in these vehicles. If you have an Equinox which is stalling when stopping, read on to find out why. Most Common Issues  There are a few things we usually check first when we diagnose an Equinox with stalling issues. While the issues we will discuss below are the most common causes of stalling we see, this list isn’t comprehensive. If you’re experiencing stalling when stopping in your Equinox, it’s a smart move to have it checked by a trained professional before the issue worsens or causes significant damage.
  • Fuel Pump Going Bad
Stalling typically occurs when idling or slowing because the engine isn’t getting sufficient fuel to stay running. A vehicle’s fuel pump regulates the amount of gasoline which goes to the engine and ensures it has enough to continue running as intended. If a fuel pump goes bad, the vehicle will stall because it’s simply not getting the gas it needs if you aren’t pressing the pedal, which is why the vehicle stalls when stopping.
  • Clogged/Dirty Throttle Body
An engine needs fuel to run, as we discussed in the last section, but it also needs airflow. In the same way a failing fuel pump limits the amount of gas an engine gets, a dirty throttle body can limit air intake and cause a vehicle to stall. If an airflow issue is suspected, the carbon buildup can be cleared and it should allow the vehicle to run as intended.
  • Sensor Issues
Modern vehicles have sensors which work together to ensure safe and efficient operation. However, when one or more of these sensors fail, it can cause a multitude of issues, including stalling. In Equinoxes, sensor issues can hinder the ignition process, airflow, and fuel supply. In any of these cases, stalling can occur.
