Enhancing Recovery with Cryo and Stretching

BY: Crystal Lopez, Recovery Lab of La Verne, CA
Wellness services can be beneficial in enhancing your recovery after a workout. However, engaging in more than one wellness service can make for an even smoother recovery process, especially for seasoned athletes. Two types of wellness services we offer here at Recovery Lab, which we consider great as a duo, include cryotherapy and mobility stretching. While they offer quite different experiences from one another, they have similar benefits and ultimately both aid in wellness recovery. Learn more about these two services and how to incorporate them into your routine below. What is Cryotherapy? Cryotherapy is a type of wellness service involving the intentional exposure to exceptionally low temperatures. The cold air is either provided by entering a whole-body cryotherapy chamber or by using a localized cryotherapy device on a part of the body. The cold air provided by cryotherapy can help elevate the body's recovery. Benefits may include lower levels of inflammation, muscle soreness relief, improved sleep, and stimulated blood flow throughout the body. What is Mobility Stretching? Mobility stretching is a very different type of wellness service. Instead of cold air, it’s more of a hands-on and physical approach. It involves specific movements or stretches guided by a professional to help the muscles recover from tension and the temporary reduction of range in motion, which may occur after a workout session or from overuse. Mobility stretching can help a client experience smoother joint movement, improved blood flow, enhanced coordination, and the reduction of muscle stagnancy. How Can Cryotherapy and Mobility Stretching Be Combined? Because there are two completely different services, cryotherapy and mobility stretching can’t be done at the same time. However, they can definitely be implemented together in someone’s routine to help them achieve enhanced recovery benefits. The implementation of these two wellness services is relatively versatile. Feel free to do cryotherapy before mobility stretching, or even mobility stretching before cryotherapy. Or you may alternate between the two. For instance, you might engage in cryotherapy after a workout. Then, after your next workout, you might try mobility stretching. It’s ultimately up to you to decide when and how often to engage in cryotherapy and mobility stretching. If you prefer one service over the other, you may decide to engage in said service more often than the other. Or you may decide to stick to only one of those services. Fitting Cryotherapy and Mobility Stretching into Your Routine So, how do you fit a wellness service into your routine, let alone two wellness services? It might seem impossible, but even the busiest of individuals can make it work. It starts by deciding how often you want to attend sessions. Twice a week? Four times a week? From there, you can determine if you want to attend these service appointments right after a workout or even the day after exercising. Deciding these things can help you determine where cryotherapy and mobility stretching fit into your routine. Have any questions about mobility stretching or cryotherapy? Contact Recovery Lab today to learn more about these services.
