Standard Upgrade: Moving From 5V Crimp to Standing Seam Mill Finish

For homes on Fort Myers Beach, “good enough” roofing is no longer an option. The standard has shifted, and the demand for hurricane-ready engineering is at an all-time high. PRG Roofing & Construction recently completed a high-profile metal roof replacement that serves as a blueprint for modern coastal protection: transforming a vulnerable 5V Crimp system into a formidable, 1.75” Standing Seam Mill Finish roof.

This wasn’t a standard “rip-and-replace” job; it was an exercise in technical precision. Let’s break down the journey, from the exposed deck to the final interlocking seam.


Part 1: The Vulnerable “Before” State

The “BEFORE” image below shows the home at the start of our process. A classic stilt house right on the canal, it originally had a standard 5V Crimp metal roof.

While 5V Crimp has been a staple of Florida coastal architecture for decades, it has an inherent vulnerability: exposed fasteners.

Standard 5V Crimp requires thousands of screws to be drilled directly through the face of the metal to secure it to the deck. While a neoprene washer seals each screw, those washers dry-rot, crack, and eventually back out in the Florida sun. This creates thousands of invisible entry points for water. On Fort Myers Beach, any penetrating fastener is a clock ticking toward a leak.

The client recognized this “fastener fatigue” and contacted PRG Roofing & Construction (License #CCC1331196) to perform a forensic upgrade. They weren’t looking for a patch; they were looking for a generational solution.


Part 2: The Critical Intermediate Layer: POLYGLASS SWR

You can purchase the most expensive metal panels in the world, but if your underlayment is standard 15-lb felt, your home is not “hurricane-ready.” The true strength of a metal system is hidden beneath the panels.

In Image 2 (the close-up view), we show the critical phase after the 5V crimp has been removed and the decking has been inspected and reinforced. The bright white material is a specialized, self-adhered Secondary Water Barrier (SWR) by POLYGLASS.

Why is this essential? On Fort Myers Beach, hurricanes are not just a “maybe”—they are a “when.” The SWR layer serves two vital functions:

  1. Monolithic Shield: As a “peel-and-stick” membrane, it creates a monolithic, watertight seal across the entire deck. It bonds to the plywood, sealing around every nail and penetration.

  2. Redundant Protection: If a hurricane manages to peel off the primary metal panels (rare with standing seam, but possible), this self-adhering SWR layer keeps the plywood deck 100% dry. This prevents the primary cause of post-storm catastrophic interior damage: a “dry” deck that stays soaked for weeks. This level of protection often qualifies homeowners for maximum Wind Mitigation insurance credits.


Part 3: The Interlocking Defense: Drexel Metals 1.75” Standing Seam

The final phase was the installation of the primary defense: Drexel Metals 24ga 1.75” Standing Seam. The results are visible in the aerial “AFTER” shot below.

This upgrade is a paradigm shift in performance:

  • Total Concealment: The entire standing seam system has zero exposed fasteners. The panels interlock with internal clips, meaning no screw penetration ever touches the Florida elements. Water runs over the roof, never through a penetration.

  • Engineering vs. Commodity: Standing seam panels are an engineered product, not a commodity. We custom-fabricate these panels on-site to the exact measurements of the roof. The 1.75” vertical seam height creates a rigid, high-profile barrier that effectively manages high-velocity wind-driven rain and resists uplift pressure.

  • Mill Finish Advantage: The client chose a “Mill Finish.” In Southwest Florida, this has a massive Cool Roof advantage. The bare aluminum effectively reflects UV rays and sheds thermal heat rapidly once the sun sets, significantly reducing AC cooling loads and energy bills.
