Sanibel, FL – Custom Solutions in the Aftermath: A Sanibel Island Challenge

SYNOPSIS: Debris lined roads, equipment moved constantly, and entire neighborhoods worked simultaneously to rebuild. In this challenging environment, we took on one of our most technically demanding projects

In the months following Hurricane Ian, Sanibel Island resembled a construction zone more than the tropical paradise Southwest Florida knows and loves. Debris lined roads, equipment moved constantly, and entire neighborhoods worked simultaneously to rebuild. In this challenging environment, we took on one of our most technically demanding projects—a complete roof transformation on Sand Castle Road.

At PRG Roofing & Construction Company, we’ve been navigating complex roofing challenges since before Hurricane Charley in 2004. But this Sanibel project tested our fabrication skills and problem-solving abilities in ways that demonstrate exactly why experience matters when island properties need precision work.

When Standard Details Don’t Fit

The homeowner wanted to upgrade from their damaged shingle roof to a Drexel Metals 24-gauge 1.75″ standing seam metal roof in Hemlock Green—a sophisticated color choice that complements Sanibel’s natural coastal landscape beautifully.

The real challenge revealed itself at the peak: a cupola that added architectural character but created a significant installation obstacle. There simply wasn’t enough space for standard detail flashings to be properly installed. In roofing, “not enough space” isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a potential leak point waiting to fail during the next tropical storm.

Many contractors would have compromised at this point, forcing standard components into inadequate spaces or suggesting the homeowner remove the cupola entirely. We don’t work that way.

Custom Fabrication Meets Coastal Architecture

Our in-house sheet metal shop gave us the capability to engineer a completely custom solution. We fabricated specialized detail flashings for the cupola that functioned as both proper weatherproofing and protective fascia—essentially combining two critical components into a single, precision-made element.

This wasn’t about making something look right. This was about creating flashings engineered to handle wind-driven rain, properly channel water away from vulnerable intersections, and integrate seamlessly with the standing seam panels running up to the peak. Every measurement had to be exact. Every bend had to be precise. Every fastening point had to be strategically placed for maximum holding power without compromising the weather barrier.

Island Logistics and Fabrication Timelines

Working on Sanibel during early recovery stages meant coordinating around limited bridge access, competing with dozens of other contractors for material deliveries, and maintaining our quality standards despite challenging site conditions.

The project required approximately three weeks from start to finish—longer than a typical metal roof installation, but necessary given the extensive custom fabrication work the cupola demanded. Through our CompanyCam documentation system, the homeowner could watch their unique roof system take shape, from the custom flashings being test-fit to the final Hemlock Green panels installed and sealed.

Proof That Details Define Performance

The before and after photos tell the complete story: a hurricane-damaged shingle roof transformed into a stunning standing seam metal system with architectural details preserved through precision custom fabrication. This homeowner now has wind resistance up to 180 mph, a life expectancy of 40-70 years, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing every vulnerable detail was engineered specifically for their structure.
