We all like to be individuals; however, there are rules and guidelines for a reason too. . Our city has given us mandates about signs: How long (or how often) a banner can be displayed, what kind of a banner, or what kind of lighting can be used, or how much coverage is allowed. The planning department of your local city government should be able to supply you with the guidelines for all of these things, should you want to take the time to research it. Sometimes it’s as easy as leaving sight areas open so that police can look in and see if anything bad is happening in your location, and sometimes it is restricted to a percentage of your total glass, or street front.
In addition to city government restrictions, there are tenant ordinances. We had a client who had magenta in her logo, but wasn’t able to use it on her light box because it wasn’t one of the approved colors for her strip mall. It took a long time to get her sign permitted (yes, permitted), and please all parties involved.

This is probably a temporary sign while they wait for a custom sign, but we don’t know. Banners are no replacement for real signs.
These regulations may seem harsh and make you feel like big brother is watching, but most of them really are for our own good. Some have to do with not shining bright lights at drivers, and some have to do with blocking or distracting traffic. Some just make our city look good. Have you seen the animated girl with a long wig who waves a large arrow luring you into the fruit market? Those are no longer allowed. . . She’s been retired.
Be sure to check with your sign maker about the codes. At Signature d’Sign, Lee has all the codes for the local cities and will be happy to advise you on what and how much space you may use. After all, who wants to spend money on a sign just to have it taken down? or get fined? Stop in and we will take care of you! We can also remove those signs that shouldn’t have been installed. . . .(just saying. . . )
