It was a foggy night. The sounds were muffled from the nearby pubs and eating establishments. There was a sports pub nearby. Gordon was out grilling meatballs and sliders, and the fish and chips were in full swing across the street at Ej’s. Across the square was an old establishment that specialized in spaghetti and clams. Picture the area; a book store on one corner and a hot dog shack on another. . . You could smell the aroma of fresh made coffee from a third corner. Down the way was a jewelry store that had been there for many years. And yes, there were the usual repair shops, nail boutiques and a pizza parlor over there by the fountain. . . The ghosts of businesses gone by the wayside were there, haunting the park. Music echoed; soft jazz was in the air.
There must have been three or four bars in the area. One was right by his cozy office. He really needed a sign. How would clients find him? He loved the little neighborhood. The mailing company across the street and a school behind him were ready for Monday. Joel Smith was a CPA; ready to help his fellow associates, one by one. . . But what kind of sign would both show his business in it’s best light, and be safe from the drunks that came out of the bar next door at the bewitching hour? It must be something that showed from the street, yet made you want to lean in and rest on the wall below. Something that wouldn’t fade too fast, but would stand up to the kids who insisted on jumping after it. . . . Hmm. . . Maybe a wooden sign, or perhaps aluminum? Would that be too modern? Ah, the perfect solution, a 1/2 inch MDF plywood would do the job. Cover it with a heavy vinyl and add a phone number for drop ins. . . An oval, hanging from 2 chains, and a special piece of metal to keep it from swaying when it is hit by a flying fist once in a while.
Joel felt comfort in knowing that his sign added to the local landscape, would be respected by the local merchants, and be kept safe from those who would harm it in their drunken stupor. . . . Have a good night, Joel, sleep well. . . .
