Encinitas, CA - Commercial Sign Company Builds Illuminated Monument Sign

SYNOPSIS: North Coast Signs designed, permitted, and installed a new illuminated monument sign for Villa Encinitas Plaza, replacing a damaged sign with a durable LED monument and changeable panels.

Illuminated Monument Sign Installed in Encinitas

BY: Fred Havens, North Coast Signs
A car hit the monument sign at Villa Encinitas Plaza, snapped it off its steel pole, and cracked the concrete base. The property management company didn't call us to patch it; they called because the old sign was gone and the shopping mall needed a replacement from the ground up. North Coast Signs is based in Vista, and we've built monument signs across Encinitas for property managers who can't afford to wait around with an empty entrance. We started by surveying what was left of the old monument for its measurements and tenant panel layout. That survey gave us the baseline dimensions and the tenant count we'd need to match or improve. From there, we worked through several rounds of design proofs with the property manager to land on a uniform duranodic bronze color scheme with white lettering across every tenant panel. The old sign had too many competing colors from different tenants, so we simplified the entire face to white lettering and logos on a monochromatic bronze surface that reads clean from the road. Three Departments, Four Months, One Permit Encinitas runs sign permits through three separate city departments: Planning, Engineering, and Building. That process took three to four months from submittal to approval, and construction couldn't start until the permit was in hand. Most property managers don't realize how long the municipal side takes, and skipping steps or filing incomplete documents stretches the timeline further. We handled every phase of the permit process, so the property manager wasn't chasing signatures between departments. Twelve Changeable Panels Per Side The finished monument holds twelve individual tenant panels on each face, separated by aluminum H-bar dividers. Each panel is translucent white acrylic with reverse contour-cut duranodic bronze vinyl applied to the surface, and every single one is removable. When a tenant moves out and a new one moves in, we swap that one panel instead of re-fabricating the entire sign face. That system keeps the monument current without tearing it apart every time a lease changes hands. LED Bars Every Twelve Inches, No Dark Gaps We installed two rows of internally illuminated vertical LED bars spaced every twelve inches inside the monument cabinet. Each row sits in front of or behind the center steel pole, which is five inches in diameter and schedule 40 grade. That spacing delivers even white illumination across all twelve tenant panels at night without bright spots near the LEDs and dark patches between them. Cheaper monument builds use fewer bars to cut costs, and the result is a sign that looks striped after sunset. Built to Ten Feet Tall and Four Feet Deep The final monument measures 120 inches wide by 144 inches tall by 48 inches deep, double-sided, with a pitched roof. The property manager's roofing vendor installed red terracotta tiles on the roof to match the plaza's architecture. We painted the sign body duranodic bronze with white sides, mounted black acrylic address numbers, and applied black vinyl QR codes on each side panel. Two through-bolts at half-inch by ten inches anchor the monument at two points of attachment, securing the full assembly to its new foundation. The Sign That Replaced a Wreck With an Upgrade Villa Encinitas Plaza didn't just get a replacement; the property got a monument that handles tenant turnover, illuminates evenly at night, and matches the architecture it sits in front of. If your Encinitas commercial property needs a monument sign that's permitted correctly, built to last, and designed so tenant swaps don't require a full rebuild, call North Coast Signs in Vista at (760) 536-5454 and we'll start with the survey.
