Carlsbad, CA – Deep Bronze Acrylic Directional Signs from Local Sign Shops

SYNOPSIS: Working from its Vista shop, North Coast Signs follows one arriving guest across Grand Pacific MarBrisa, a resort property in Carlsbad, to show how a deep bronze directional set does its work.

Bronze Directional Signs Read at Walking Speed

BY: Fred Havens, North Coast Signs

North Coast Signs built and installed a set of directional panels for Grand Pacific MarBrisa, a resort property in Carlsbad. The way to judge a set like that is to follow one guest through it. That guest leaves the parking area with a suitcase in one hand and a unit number in memory, and the walkways between the parking area and that unit branch more than once. At every branch the guest makes one decision, and each decision has to happen at walking speed. The panels are acrylic, in a deep bronze with white copy, and the point of the whole set is that this guest reaches the right building without a stop at the front desk.

The Far Read Across the Property

The first panel is in view long before the guest can read it. From that distance the deep bronze field sits quiet against the stucco and the landscaping, and the white copy is what carries. Characters have to contrast with their background, either light on dark or dark on light, and the surface has to be non-glare. A deep bronze field under white copy satisfies both conditions, so the copy stays legible when the afternoon sun crosses the walkway. The guest closes the distance with the white line already in view and the reading already started.

The Junction at Walking Speed

The first real test comes at a fork in the walkway. A person in motion reads one line and moves on, so we hold each panel to a single decision. Each panel runs a little over two feet wide and a little over a foot high, which is all the field a walking guest can take in at a turn. Inside that field the guest finds the arrow first and the numbers second, in that order every time. The layout is settled in the drawing, so the same information sits in the same position on every panel in the set, and the second junction reads faster than the first.

The Arrow, the Unit Range, and the Word Laundry

The panel at that junction carries an arched top, white arrows, a range of unit numbers, and the word Laundry. The guest matches a remembered unit number against the range, takes the direction from the arrow, and keeps walking. The whole stop lasts a second or two, which is the pace the set was designed around. The arched top repeats on every panel we build for the property, so each one reads as part of the same set.

The Standard the Guest Never Notices

By this point the guest has read the panels and noticed none of the decisions behind them. The panels name unit ranges and the laundry room, so they do an identification job as much as a directional one. Signs that identify a permanent room or space have to carry raised characters and braille, while signs that only give direction meet visual criteria, so we built the whole set to the identification standard. That decision changes the fabrication, because the raised copy has to stand off the face by a measured minimum. It also drives the layout, since the code names a range of 48 to 60 inches for the baselines of the tactile characters, and the installer works to that range at every panel. Mounting is settled before fabrication as well, because these panels go onto exterior stucco and a textured surface changes the attachment pattern. An acrylic body suits a property this close to the water, where airborne salt reaches well inland and corrodes exposed metal.

The Match When a Panel Is Replaced

The walk ends at a unit door, and the sign set keeps working long after this guest has checked out. A resort adds signs over time, and a later panel has to match the one this guest walked past today. We record the exact bronze at fabrication, so a replacement ordered years later is painted to that record and never to a guess at a faded panel. Where a property runs its own sign program, we hold the panel shape, the copy style, and the finish to that standard as the set grows. JC Golf & Resorts, which runs resort properties in this county, describes our team as reliable and dependable for all of its sign requests. We build the set in Vista and install it at the property.

You get the most out of a directional package when the whole property is planned as one walk, from the parking area to the last door. Send us your destination list and the number of signs you need, and we will size the copy, set the contrast, and lay out the mounting for your walls. Call North Coast Signs at (760) 536-5454.
