Families arriving at an amusement park have one thing on their minds, and it is not deciphering faded directional signs. Directional signage at entertainment venues carries unique pressure because guests arrive excited and impatient, expecting clear guidance delivering them from public roads to parking spaces to entrance gates without delays, transforming anticipation into irritation. When directional signs fail at a theme park, the guest experience begins to degrade before anyone reaches the ticket window.
At North Coast Signs in Vista, we recently completed a comprehensive directional sign project for Legoland California in Carlsbad, refurbishing approximately 35 aluminum post directional signs that had weathered over twenty years of coastal exposure since original installation in 1999. The project originally planned for 2020 was delayed by COVID, but when Legoland came back in 2024, we executed a refurbishment approach, delivering updated signage for the peak holiday season at a fraction of the total replacement cost.
Site Surveys and Aerial Mapping
Before any design work began, our team conducted multiple site surveys, driving through the Legoland parking lot in a golf cart to photograph every existing sign and document current conditions, including fading, peeling, and structural issues that photographs from moving cars cannot accurately capture. We created an aerial map marking the placement of all directional signs so our installers could return each refurbished sign to its exact original location, maintaining wayfinding logic that guests have learned over years of visits. Site survey documentation also revealed which signs had suffered damage requiring repair before refurbishment could proceed.
Design Proofs for Updated Information
The Legoland parking lot now includes two hotels, Castle and Legoland, along with multiple parking areas that the original 1999 signage did not anticipate existing. We developed several rounds of design proofs, ensuring updated content and directional information accurately reflected the current parking lot configuration and guest destinations. We proposed a new color coding scheme for different parking areas, with gray designated for the Castle area, giving guests immediate visual cues about which section they are entering without requiring them to read detailed text while driving.
Refurbishment Over Replacement
The existing directional signs used solid aluminum posts fitted into a sleeve system where posts lift straight up from concrete footings installed in the ground, a design that proved structurally sound through over twenty years of coastal weather and parking lot traffic. Rather than proposing costly total replacement of all sign structures, we recommended refurbishing the existing signs because aluminum structures remained sturdy and strong despite cosmetic deterioration from faded vinyl and peeling paint. We removed approximately 35 double-sided signs in phases, minimizing guest disruption, then sanded all faded paint and deteriorated vinyl down to bare aluminum at our Vista facility.
Brand Consistent Paint and Graphics
Following surface preparation, we painted sign poles a bright, shiny red color consistent with Legoland’s marketing guide, transforming weathered aluminum into fresh visual elements matching current brand standards throughout the property. Upper cabinets received shiny blue paint, also specified to match brand guidelines, creating the signature color combination guests associate with the park experience. Each 24-inch wide by 48-inch tall aluminum cabinet received a full color digital vinyl print with cut white reflective vinyl lettering and symbols visible at night as effectively as during daylight operations.
Deadline for Peak Season
We worked against a tight deadline, completing the entire project before year-end, so Legoland would have fresh directional signage in place for peak season before Christmas, when family attendance reaches its annual maximum. Our installers reinstalled each sign in its mapped location using existing concrete footings and sleeve systems, with poles mounted into saddles and aluminum cabinets secured above. Customer was thrilled with the results, and the guest experience was elevated with proper signage directing families to an enjoyable time at Legoland California.
