What are Custom Dimensional Letters?
Dimensional signs are three-dimensional letters, numbers, and symbols cut from a solid substrate or material. They are designed to give depth to a sign while being durable and easy to care for.
They can be flat cut meaning the share or letter is cut directly from the material using a waterjet, laser or router or fabricated meaning the shapes are formed from individual pieces glued or welded together.
What Materials are Used for Custom Dimensional Letters?
Dimensional letters are crafted from many materials. Here is a look at some of the popular substrates:
- Acrylic: This plastic is translucent and can resemble glass. It is easy to mold and shape while being a good choice for unique lighting options.
- Wood: This is ideal for a rustic or natural looking sign. Wood is durable, can be stained, and painted to enhance grains. It is best for indoor signs to keep maintenance minimal.
- Foam: Lightweight and cost-effective, foam is easy to cut into many shapes. It is the best choice for thicker letters and is easy to customize.
- Aluminum: This light metal gives signs sleek and modern look while being resistant to rust.
- PVC: This sturdy plastic is best for intricate design due to how easily it can be precision-cut. It can be made smooth or textured and is easy to paint.
How Can Dimensional Letters be Lit?
- Spotlight or floodlight: Best for outdoors, a light is focused on the sign. It can be installed on the ground or another structure. This is the best option for easy maintenance.
- Edge lighting: LED lights are adhered around the edges of the letters, illuminating the sides for a unique outline effect.
- Halo-lit: Lights are affixed to the back of the letters and shine off the mounting surface to create a cool halo effect around the letter.
How are Custom Dimensional Letters Installed?
First before the installation starts, the site is checked to determine the best mounting method and to ensure there will be no issues once the process begins.
Next, the surface is cleaned, and a template is used to ensure the letters are level and in the correct place.
The letters are then mounted flush against the wall or with spacers or stand-offs for a stronger 3D effect. The stand-off mounting is also good for the addition of backlighting.
Once the letters are in place and any lighting is installed, everything is double checked to make sure the sign looks perfect and cleaned to remove any debris from the installation.
