As with every new start, a new building, requires a new sign. When Upper Deck was relocating to a new office building in Carlsbad, they reached out to furnish them with some new corporate signage. It was important to their business to maintain brand consistency with signage that accurately depicted their colorful logo. And we rose to the occasion!
Building Sign for Upper Deck
Upper Deck made their name in 1989 with their inaugural baseball trading cards. With stores all over the USA, as well as a magnificent online store, they’re No 1 in the USA for sports and entertainment memorabilia. They pride themselves on delivering merchandise that is 100% authentic and a good investment.
Upper Deck needed corporate signage for two areas: building façade, and monument. We first performed a site survey taking photos and measurements to verify the signage would fit the spaces accurately. Then we provided design proofs by scaling their logo for the sign locations.

For the monument sign, we created the façade signage using ½” thick acrylic, cut to 48” by 37.5” size with the logo digitally printed with UV laminate applied to the front surface. We verified the pantone colors used matched their branding logo.
Building Sign Install for Upper Deck
For the building sign, we created this sign using 090 aluminum for a reverse pan frame with 2” returns. This means that the metal bottom of the letters face outwards against the building fascia, rather than inwards. We painted the edges the same yellow-orange color for consistency. The Upper Deck logo was applied to the front surface, with UV laminate. The results were stunning, as you can see in the photos.

For both signs, we printed the logo on premium quality 3m exterior grade vinyl with matching UV laminate to guard against fading. When it came to installing them, we already had the permits in place and landlord approval. This part of the project is never a simple matter. It often involves, as in this case, extra research to get those final approvals signed off.
We also installed both signs using studs, and made sure they were flush with both the building and the existing monument sign. The building sign needed to be mounted quite high, and was installed right on time.
Upper Deck is delighted with the results. Our speed and efficiency in design, planning, and installation made sure that there was no break in brand promotion. Using reverse pan metal for the corporate logo ensured a softer, more elegant look. Though subtle, attention to detail can have a massive impact on retaining and attracting new clients.
