CapellaLobbySignSideClose_lo Take a quick look at the photos in this article. This is a custom 61.25" wide x 22.5" high lobby sign that we made for a client of ours not too long ago. There are a lot of components to the sign, which when combined, make for a truly magnificent looking lobby sign with a lot of eye-catching qualities. Signs can sometimes be fairly simple to design, fabricate and install, depending on the particular project, and the materials we are working with. On the other end of the spectrum, some signs can be extremely complex, with various layers and different materials.   Capella_LobbySignCloseUp_EditedIn order to give our customers and readers an idea of what it takes to make a sign like this, we’ve decided to discuss our process a little bit, and what went into making this sign for Capella. How It’s Made As you can see in the pictures, the word Capella is comprised of multiple layers. On the bottom layer is a 1/2" thick piece of white PVC, which has a brushed aluminum finish on the face, and is painted matte black along the edges. Working upwards from the back to the front, or you could also say from the bottom to the top layer, next is a layer made from 1/8" PVC, which is painted tan to create the yellowish/tannish shadow in between the white and the brushed aluminum layer. The nCapellLobbyClose_loext layer is made of 1/4" white acrylic, which creates the white outline, also sometimes called a stroke, around the Capella lettering. The top layer, which features the actual Capella lettering, is made from 1/4" clear acrylic that has a layer of vinyl applied to it, which has the gradient that transitions from black to red. Those four layers make up the main Capella logo, and then the tagline words of CONCENTRATED (above the logo) and FLAVORS (below the logo) are 1/2" thick black acrylic letters. Once the sign had been fully fabricated, it was time for the installation phase. In order to mount this sign to the wall, we used a wall rail system, and hung the sign with cables that mount to the top of the wall. The sign actually hangs from, and is mounted to, the top of the wall right, but where the ceiling meets it, so it blends in and isn’t easily seen from a few steps back. It was a bit of a challenge to mount the brushed aluminum laminate metal on the reception wall because Capella did not want any holes drilled into the wall.  Plus, the ceiling was a drop ceiling, which wouldn't support a suspension system.  The solution: wall-mounted rails that support stainless steel cables (40 lbs.), suspending the lobby sign as if it was hanging from the wall itself. capella_lobbysign_edited2_closeAbout Our Client: Capella is a company based here in Carlsbad, California, and creates various types of flavoring agents in the form of droplets, for various food and beverage flavor enhancement. We specialize in many different types of custom signs for all types of different businesses in Carlsbad, California, as well as throughout the North San Diego area, and lobby signs are one of them. As you can see in this article, by layering multiple layers of vinyl, and equipping the top layer with a custom gradient, we were able to achieve a very high end looking sign.  If you have any questions about a lobby or reception sign for your business, or have any other questions at all about signage, we would be more than happy to help.
