Winston-Salem, NC – 3 Flammable Items in Every Office | Fire Restoration News

BY: Your Name, Your Business

Do you know your office has flammable items that can be a potential fire hazard?

Fire hazards at the workplace should be taken seriously, especially so many lives are at stake. Protecting office property and personnel from fire damage is not just the responsibility of the business owner, but also of all the employees working there. Office fires can rack up damage worth thousands of dollars and it can cost even more to settle injuries.

It’s nearly impossible to avoid having flammable items around your office. However, knowing the severity of office fires, the least we can do is to learn about what these items are and how to protect your employees and the office premises from them.

In this post, we’re going to discuss some common flammable items that can potentially cause a fire at your workplace.

Extension Cords

Wire Gauge

While they are a convenient way to supply power to electrical devices, if used without proper precautions, they can pose risk to the safety of workers.

Choose extension cords that are rated to handle the wattage of the devices with which they will be used. The American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a numerical rating that indicates the size or gauge of the cord. The smaller the number, the larger the wire and the more electrical current the cord can safely handle.

Never overload an extension cord by plugging too many devices or appliances into it simultaneously, especially if it’s already connected to a heavy-duty appliance. Overloading a power outlet through the use of extension wires can result in a short circuit and potentially an electrical fire.

Furthermore, these extension cords should never be placed under carpets or rugs or behind furniture as that could damage them and the trapped heat may lead to a fire.

Scented Oil Diffusers

Although not all vaporized essential oils can ignite and catch fire, it is advisable not to place these diffusers near ignition sources. Moreover, the essential oil should not be stored close to ignition sources as well. The heat changes the chemical composition of the oils, and there is a chance of vapors igniting and catching fire.

A safer option is to use mist diffusers in the office that simply disperse the scent particles into the air using water.

Aerosol Cans

One of the most flammable items in your office, these cans contain butane or propane as propellants, both of which are flammable gases. Most offices have aerosol cans present in the form of cleaning sprays, insecticide sprays, deodorants, and other toiletries. These cans can explode when they are overheated. It’s best to store them in secure, cool and well-ventilated areas away from any ignition sources.

As you already know, the impact of a fire on your business can be devastating. And even with the best safety precautions, fires may still break out.
