BY: Your Name, Your Business

When it comes to water damage it’s important to know what kind of danger you may be in.

Do you have a flood or standing water on your hands?

Water can cause a lot of damage to your home or property, but there are also dangers that could potentially harm you. So, while it is important to act quickly with standing water and leaks, you need to make sure you’re also being safe.

When it comes to water, there are three basic categories to classify different types of water and their level of potential danger to humans. So, we’ve quickly outlined the three categories to help you more easily identify what type of water you have on your hands, and whether or not you should avoid coming into contact with it.

Category 1

Category 1 water is going to be water that is from a clean source and poses no harm or significant potential threat to human health. If you are unable to identify where the water source is coming from, but it appears to be a clean water source, you should still call a professional to come and inspect it. You can only know for sure that the water is safe and clean if you know where the source is located.

Category 2

Category 2 water is commonly referred to as grey water, and is not good for humans to come in contact with it. Grey water typically contains some kind of chemical, biological or other type of contamination, and has the potential to be harmful to humans. Either by consumption or through exposure, humans that come in contact with grey water can potentially become sick or at least experience irritation and discomfort, either internally or externally, like on their skin or in their eyes.

Category 3

Category 3 water is reserved for the most contaminated and potentially dangerous water. It can contain pathogens and bacteria that will most likely cause sickness or even death if consumed by or exposed to humans, as well as animals. It’s important to not forget about your pets when dealing with standing water that could potentially be harmful. Sewage water, seawater, surface groundwater and flood water are all often categorized as level three.
