Oro Valley, AZ – Pelvic Therapy for Pelvic Pain Linked to Hip Stiffness

SYNOPSIS: This article covers how your limited hip movement can contribute to pelvic pain and how pelvic therapy can address both areas together, so you are not stuck chasing symptoms.

When Your Hip Stiffness Drives Pelvic Pain

BY: Bob Androff, Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ
Why Pelvic Pain Can Start AtThe Hip We see this more than people expect. Your hip is meant to rotate and extend with walking, stairs, and even simple things like getting out of a car. When that motion gets tight or blocked, your body still has to move. It finds another way. Often, that “other way” comes from the pelvis and the pelvic floor. Over time, the pelvic tissues start carrying an extra load. That’s when pain, pressure, or a deep ache can show up, even though the hip stiffness was the first problem. How This Shows Up During Normal Days Most patients describe a repeat pattern. Sitting through a meeting or driving across town feels fine at first, then the front of the hip tightens. When you stand up, you feel pulling low in the pelvis or a heavy, uncomfortable pressure. Some people notice it when they take longer strides on a walk. Others feel it in workouts, especially squats and lunges, because the hip can’t move freely, and the pelvis tenses up to keep you steady. Nothing about that is unusual. It’s a common compensation loop. Why The Pelvic Floor Gets Overworked The pelvic floor does not work alone. It works with the hips, deep core, and breathing to manage pressure and control movement. If a stiff hip keeps limiting motion, the pelvic floor may stay “on” longer than it should, even when you are resting. People often brace without realizing it. They hold their breath when they lift. They tighten their lower belly when they stand or walk. That constant guarding can make the pelvic floor feel sore and touchy, and it can make coordination harder, even if the root issue started with hip stiffness. Signs Hip Stiffness May Be Part OfThe Problem Pelvic pain can have several causes, so we never assume it’s only the hip. Still, these patterns often show up when hip stiffness is part of what’s driving symptoms:
  • Pelvic pain that worsens after sitting or driving
  • Hip pinching or stiffness that comes with pelvic pressure
  • Discomfort during stairs, hills, or longer walking strides
  • Pulling sensations in the groin, inner thigh, or low belly
  • Symptoms that flare after squats, lunges, or running
  • Relief with movement that fades once sitting returns
How Pelvic Therapy Addresses Both Areas Pelvic therapy works best when we treat the system. That means we look at hip mobility, hip strength, breathing patterns, and how your deep core supports movement. Some patients need to reduce pelvic floor tension first, because strengthening on top of constant gripping can backfire. Others need better hip control so the pelvis doesn’t have to tighten to feel stable. We also build the plan around your real triggers, like driving, desk work, walking, or workouts, so the changes carry over outside the clinic. What Treatment Often Includes Care depends on what we find, but therapy for hip-related pelvic pain commonly includes:
  • Hip mobility work to restore rotation and extension
  • Pelvic floor coordination, including relaxation or strengthening
  • Deep core training without constant bracing
  • Glute and hip stabilizer strengthening
  • Movement coaching for sitting, walking, stairs, and lifting
  • A simple home plan that fits real schedules
