
Pop the cover under a higher-mileage Camry and you'll sometimes find a dried pink crust at the water pump's weep hole, the tell most owners never see. It shows up first as a faint sweet smell in the cabin and a coolant level that keeps dropping while the garage floor stays dry. At our San Ramon shop we see these Camrys come in from around town with exactly that puzzle. The good news is that a water pump rarely fails without warning, and the two early signs are easy to read once you know where to look.
The Weep Hole Is the Pump's Built-In Tell
That crust is dried coolant that worked its way out of the seal. The pump runs an internal shaft seal and a bearing, and the weep hole sits between them to route a failing seal's drip to the outside. So dried pink or green residue at that hole comes from the pump itself, and not from a hose or a clamp that wet a different spot. We locate the weep hole from below, read the color and the exact spot, then hold the cooling system at pressure to force a slow seep into the open. That pressure test is what separates the pump from the simpler suspects around it.
A Rising Whine Comes From the Bearing
The second warning is a sound you can hear. As the shaft bearing wears, it develops play and a whine or growl that rises with engine rpm from the front of the engine. You can hear it get a little worse over a few weeks. We confirm it with a hands-on check that costs nothing: with the drive belt off, we grip the pump pulley and push, pull, and spin it, and any play or roughness means the bearing is worn before a drop of coolant has leaked. That 60-second check is one most owners never get, and it catches the failure early.
A Sweet Smell With No Puddle on the Floor
Plenty of owners notice the smell before they ever see a drop. A warm seep gives off vapor you can smell in the cabin while the coolant slowly disappears and the driveway stays clean, because a slow leak often shows only when the engine is warm and under pressure. That's why a cold, static look can miss it entirely. We run the pressure test warm, so the system holds operating pressure and the seep appears at the source. Topping off the reservoir week after week only masks the same leak while it grows.
When the Temp Gauge Climbs, Stop Driving
There's a line between a repair you schedule and one that can't wait. A pump with a stable seep and a normal temperature gauge is a planned job you book on your own timeline. A gauge climbing above normal is a different story, because a pump that can no longer circulate coolant leaves combustion heat with nowhere to go, and the temperature rises fast toward a warped head and a failed head gasket. If that happens, shut it off and have it towed rather than nursing it home. When a car has already overheated, we run a combustion-gas test to check whether the head gasket still holds before anything else is decided.
The V6 Pump Is the Commonly Serviced One
Which engine is under the hood changes how likely the pump even is. The 3.5-liter V6, the 2GR-FE used in the Camry from 2007 through 2017, is the pump owners hear about most, commonly serviced past roughly 100,000 miles and tucked into tight quarters at the front of the engine where it takes more labor to reach. The four-cylinder pump fails far less often, so on those cars we look harder at the hoses, the radiator, and the mounting gasket first. None of this is a recall or a defect, and it's ordinary wear, which is exactly why catching it at the sign keeps the job small and planned.
