Two MDXs can arrive with the same clunk over bumps and turn out to carry two different worn joints on the lift. A vague noise is hard to pin down over the phone, because the same clunk could come from a five-minute link or a worn strut at the corner. From anywhere in Blackhawk, owners bring that clunk to our San Ramon shop, and we start by finding out when the noise happens, because the timing narrows the suspect list before we touch a part. Most of the time the real cause is one worn piece you could hold in your hand, and the work is finding it before anything gets replaced.

The Timing of the Noise Comes First

When the noise happens is data, so we begin every suspension complaint with a road test that reproduces it. A clunk or rattle over bumps usually comes from the sway-bar end links, a worn strut, or a bushing. A squeak or creak while you turn belongs to the upper strut mount, a tie rod, or a ball joint. A clunk that lands under braking is the signature of a worn control-arm bushing, so the timing sets which joints we load and check on the lift.

The Clunk Over Bumps and the End Links

Over bumps, the most common cause on an MDX is a worn sway-bar end link. Each link is a small ball-and-socket that ties the stabilizer bar to the suspension, and as the stud wears or the boot cracks, it develops play and knocks over sharp bumps. We bounce the corner first, because a bad link commonly knocks on the rebound, then pry each link on the lift, where a good one moves as a unit while a worn ball rocks in its socket. Split boots and leaking grease are visible tells before we even pry, and a worn strut or damper is the other suspect over bumps.

The Squeak That Only Shows Up in a Turn

A squeak or pop that shows up only while you turn the wheel is a separate case, and on a 2014 to 2016 MDX it is most commonly a dislodged upper spring rubber. Acura documented it in bulletin 16-042: the rubber that seats the top of the front coil spring shifts out of position, so the spring loads against the metal seat and rotates against it as the strut turns. The corrective action replaces both upper spring rubbers and reuses the strut assembly itself. We reproduce it with a dry-park test, steering lock to lock with the car's weight on the wheels while we listen at the strut tower. Then we look up through the wheel well at the upper mounting area, where Acura publishes a good-versus-bad reference photo, so we confirm the part by sight before we recommend it.

The 2014 to 2016 Rear Clunk, and a Misread Bulletin

A clunk or rattle from the rear over bumps has its own documented cause on the 2014 to 2016 MDX, and Acura addressed it in service bulletin 16-035. It covers the rear dampers and the rear upper damper-mount bushings as they wear and loosen at the top, so on the lift we bounce each rear corner and inspect for leakage and cracking. Both bulletins ran under Acura's normal warranty, which has expired on these model years, though a quick VIN check for open recalls is still worth a minute before any suspension work. The 14-040 bulletin you'll see quoted for the MDX across the web is the 2014 to 2015 Acura RLX, a different model, so a careful shop cites the service bulletin matching the model year and symptom.

Why We Load-Test Before Naming a Part

Because each joint only makes noise under the load that exposes its wear, we reproduce that load by hand with a dry-park test and a pry test, and the worn joint is the one with play. We rock the tire top and bottom for a ball joint, and side to side for a tie rod, so each suspect gets its own confirmation. A clunk under braking that rides with steering wander and uneven front-tire edge wear is the pattern of a worn control-arm compliance bushing, and an alignment follows any control-arm work. All of this is how we tell you which single joint is worn, so you replace the one worn part instead of a whole corner of good ones.
