Tracing a BMW 328i Oil Leak to Its Source

Three gaskets cover most 328i oil leaks, and each one weeps in a different spot, so the drip pattern on the floor is where the diagnosis begins. You might notice a few dark drops on the Danville garage floor, or catch a faint burning smell after you park. Neither one means the engine is on its way out. On a BMW, oil almost always traces back to a gasket that has dried and stopped sealing, and the trick is naming the right one before anything gets replaced. From our San Ramon shop, we service these BMWs for Danville drivers who want that answer first.

A 328i Badge Covers Two Different Engines

The 328i name spans two entirely different engines, and naming yours is the first step. On E90 cars built from 2007 to 2011, it's an N51 or N52 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six, depending on the car's emissions certification. On the F30 cars built from 2012 to 2016, it's the N20, or the California-emissions N26, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four. Both families leak from the same three gaskets, yet the exact parts and their locations shift with the engine. We read the engine before we read the leak, so the diagnosis starts ahead of a generic guess.

Three Gaskets, Three Drip Signatures

The valve cover leaks up top around the spark-plug wells, the oil filter housing leaks down the side onto the belt, and the oil pan drips straight down in a centered puddle. Each gasket dries and hardens under BMW's engine heat until it stops sealing, and each one shows up in its own place. The valve cover sits highest, so its oil weeps over the back of the head. The housing bolts to the side of the block, so its oil runs down toward the belt and accessories. That housing leak has shown up on BMWs for decades, from the old E36 through today's four-cylinders, so we expect it on a higher-mileage car. Read the location on the floor, and you have already narrowed the source.

Reading the Smell, the Smoke, and the Spark-Plug Wells

Some of the diagnosis happens before the car ever reaches the lift. A burning-oil smell and a wisp of smoke off the exhaust manifold mean oil from an upper leak is landing on hot metal. Oil sitting in the spark-plug wells is a valve-cover signature, and it can cross into the ignition and bring on a misfire, which is a good reason not to keep driving on it. A low-oil message between changes, or oily grime by the intake, sends a lot of owners looking in the first place. We can place the leak high or low from the smell and the shadow before we open anything up.

Oil Travels Down, So We Trace the Highest Wet Point

One rule keeps the repair honest: oil always travels down, and a BMW often carries more than one weep at once. That means a lower wet spot can be fed from a leak sitting above it, so the highest wet point is the real source. We degrease the top end, run the engine to temperature, and follow the fresh oil up to where it begins. A little UV dye in the oil settles it, glowing at the exact seam under a black light. On a higher-mileage 328i we sometimes find two weeps stacked together, and the trace is how we learn how many are there. When the housing is the source, we also confirm its sealing surface is flat before it goes back together, because a scraped low spot leaks again.

See the Exact Gasket Before Anything Is Replaced

A 328i leaks from three known gaskets, and a dye trace pinpoints the one that is weeping. One call to (925) 830-4701 puts your 328i on our lift, where we trace the seep with dye and show you the leaking gasket instead of guessing at three. You leave knowing which gasket to fix and why.
