When Does It Overheat And When Is It Fine?

Why Isn’t It The Thermostat?

How Do We Test The Fan First?
The fan is the first piece to confirm, so checking it comes before spending your money on parts. With the engine warm, the test is to watch whether the fan switches on as the temperature climbs. Switching the AC on should command the fan no matter the coolant temperature, so a fan that stays dead with the AC running has already told us something. The relay, the temperature sensor, or the wiring can fail while the motor itself is fine, so the more common parts get checked before anyone condemns the whole fan assembly.
What Else Chokes The Airflow?
A dead fan is the common answer, though it isn’t the only way traffic starves a radiator of air. A core packed with bugs and grime on the outside, or scaled up with old coolant inside, sheds less heat than it should. Trapped air belongs on this list as well. An airlock after a coolant service mimics a fan fault almost exactly, with the gauge swinging and the heater going cold. The fix there is to bleed the system and confirm the coolant is moving, rather than chase a fan that’s already doing its job.
What Happens If You Keep Driving On It?
The longer a Civic runs hot, the more the damage adds up. Run a Civic hot enough, often enough, and the aluminum cylinder head warps while the head gasket gives out. That failure turns a fan-relay repair into an engine teardown worth far more than the part you skipped.
