At a red light, the C-Class shakes through the seat. Once traffic moves, you feel it hesitate as you pull away. Uneven combustion can produce both symptoms; a worn engine mount can pass vibration into the cabin even while the engine runs evenly. We repair Mercedes-Benz engines and motor mounts at Precision Auto Care in San Leandro for Oakland drivers.
A Missed Spark Can Make The Whole Car Shake
Each cylinder produces power when its air-fuel mixture burns. A cylinder that misfires interrupts that even delivery of power, making the engine shake. The uneven firing can be felt at idle and can interrupt acceleration when you press the pedal. A worn spark plug or failing coil can cause that miss. The coil generates the voltage needed to fire the spark plug. As a plug wears and its gap widens, the coil has to produce more voltage to fire it. We check both as part of our ignition and engine work. A replacement coil still has to fire through the plug beneath it, so an excessively worn plug needs attention at the same time.
Worn Mounts Can Transmit A Steady Vibration
The steering wheel vibrates under your hands, yet the engine is firing evenly. Mounts support the engine and cushion its normal movement before it reaches the body. Worn cushioning lets more of that vibration reach the cabin. We replace deteriorated motor mounts. After an ignition repair, an engine can be firing evenly while the cabin still vibrates. Replacing the mount restores the cushioning that new plugs and coils cannot provide.
An Intake Leak Can Make The Idle Rise And Fall
Your foot is off the accelerator, but the idle rises and falls. The engine needs a controlled amount of air mixed with its fuel. A leaking intake connection or gasket admits extra air and can make that mixture too lean. The stumble can continue with sound plugs and coils. We check intake connections and gaskets for leaks that let air enter where it shouldn't. When excess air is causing the stumble, sealing the intake can steady the idle with the existing ignition parts still in place.
Fuel Or Compression Trouble Can Also Cause A Misfire
An engine can have a strong spark and still stumble if one cylinder isn't getting the fuel it needs. The injector supplies a measured amount of fuel. If that supply is faulty, the cylinder may produce less power than the others, even though its plug is firing.
The cylinder must also hold pressure as its piston rises. Worn piston rings or a valve that fails to seal can let pressure escape. Fuel and spark cannot compensate for that lost seal. A compression test measures the pressure the cylinder can build; further leak testing can locate where it escapes. A valve seals in the cylinder head; the rings seal around a piston farther down in the engine. We test before opening the engine for repair. A faulty injector calls for fuel-system work; a valve that won't seal or worn rings require work inside the engine.
Hard Shaking With A Flashing Light Needs Prompt Action
A misfiring cylinder can send unburned fuel into the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter. If the check-engine light flashes while the C-Class shakes hard, stop safely and avoid driving farther. The engine fault needs attention before continued operation adds exhaust damage.
Stalling or an inability to accelerate predictably also makes driving through traffic unsafe. Have the car transported for repair in those circumstances. If the engine runs evenly and the car accelerates smoothly, we check how its normal vibration is reaching the cabin. A worn mount needs repair, but it doesn't mean the engine has to come apart.
