The rear wheels clear a speed bump, but you're still bobbing in the seat. Worn shocks or struts can leave a Lexus RX bouncing long after the bump itself. We repair RX suspension at Precision Auto Care in San Leandro. Our work includes struts and their mounts.
The Body Keeps Moving After The Road Levels Out
The springs compress as the wheels cross a bump, then extend again. The shocks or struts resist that up-and-down movement so the body settles. As their damping weakens, one bump can leave you moving in the seat through several rises and falls. The pavement is smooth again, but the RX hasn't settled. The repeated movement comes after the impact.
A Knock Over An Edge Can Come From A Mount
A clunk as one wheel crosses a driveway edge can start where the strut attaches to the body. The mount includes cushioning that helps isolate vibration. When that cushioning wears, movement at the connection can become a knock you hear inside the cabin. Other worn suspension connections can make similar noises. We repair RX struts and mounts. A damper can still control the wheel while its upper mount knocks, so the two parts need separate checks. If both are worn, leaving the old mount above a new strut can leave you hearing the same clunk on the way home.
More Movement When You Brake Or Turn
Damping also controls body movement when you brake or turn. With worn shocks or struts, the front can dip more under braking and the body can lean more through a corner. Those movements can develop alongside the bounce over bumps. Braking and cornering load the suspension even on smooth pavement.
Inside a shock or strut, a piston pushes fluid through small passages to resist movement. A substantial leak reduces that resistance. Oil running down the casing needs checking, but a dry casing doesn't rule out wear inside. An RX that keeps bouncing or leans excessively can need damper repair without leaving an obvious oil stain.
