Castro Valley CA – Could a Lexus ES 350 Misfire Be Caused by Bad Ignition Coils?

SYNOPSIS: We diagnose ES 350 misfires by confirming the failed coil through a swap test rather than replacing all six coils on a guess. Precision Auto Care in San Leandro handles this work for Castro Valley.

ES 350 Misfire? We Test the Coil Before We Order

BY: Jimmy Yamini, Precision Auto Care

We see the same upsell pattern across the industry on this vehicle. The customer arrives with a single misfire code, and the shop quotes six coils and six spark plugs as a flat package. From 2007 to 2012, on the Lexus ES 350 with the 2GR-FE V6, we replaced only the failed coil after confirming which one through a swap test. The 2GR-FE earns a strong reputation for longevity, and replacing five healthy coils because one failed costs you parts you didn’t need.

How a Weakening Coil Hides at Idle

You may notice the misfire first during a hard merge or pulling away from a stop on a grade. The car settles into a smooth idle right after, and the check engine light may turn solid hours later rather than the moment the stumble happens. Cylinder pressure climbs sharply during acceleration, and that higher pressure raises the voltage required for the spark to jump the plug gap. A weakening coil produces enough voltage at idle and falls short the instant the engine asks for more.

The Cylinder Number Behind the Repair Cost

Six coils sit on the 2GR-FE V6 in your ES 350, three across each bank of three cylinders. Cylinders 2, 4, and 6 sit on the accessible front bank facing the radiator, where each coil comes off in minutes once the engine cover lifts. Cylinders 1, 3, and 5 sit on the rear bank against the firewall, hidden underneath the upper intake manifold and the wiper cowl. Toyota’s flat-rate book lists rear-bank coil replacement as roughly a three-hour job, which means the cylinder number on your scanner already shapes the labor estimate.

How We Confirm the Coil Through a Swap Test

We pull the suspect coil from the misfiring cylinder and trade it with a coil from a healthy cylinder. The car gets cleared codes and a short road test, and we read the new code afterward to see whether the misfire moved with the coil. If the code follows the coil to its new cylinder, we order one replacement coil rather than six. If the code stays on the original cylinder, we look at the spark plug, the fuel injector, or compression on that hole.

Reading the Codes from P0301 Through P0306, Plus P0356

Your scanner pulls a code in the P0301 through P0306 range whenever a cylinder misfires, and the last digit names the cylinder. A separate code, P0356, indicates an electrical fault inside the coil bolted to cylinder 6. P0306 reports the misfire itself, while P0356 reports the coil hardware, so the two codes together point at the same cylinder for different reasons. We read both during the diagnostic and use them to build a complete picture before recommending any coil replacement.

Bring Your ES 350 to Our Bay

Call (510) 351-8211 with the cylinder number from your scanner in hand, and we’ll book a same-week swap test at our San Leandro location. Castro Valley drivers find their way to our shop through the 580 corridor without extended travel. We confirm the failed coil before we order a single part, because the right diagnosis saves you the cost of parts you don’t need.
